(Ken's commentary): One of the sad events in the life of a racing seaplane owner.
Also, some of the happy events in the life of a seaplane owner: It WAS paid-off. It also looks like the owner/pilot made a safe exit from the plane. With a little overwatch from the Caterpillar Kami, our Spontoon Speed Week racer will safely parachute to island earth or lagoon beach, to fly again.

"No problem! Our navy will have the finest of frigates and mine-sweepers stationed no more than 30 miles apart, the length of the race path. Each complementary life raft will be equipped with a battery-powered telegraph radio and a set of 12 of the finest in automobile batteries from our sponsor, Standard Oil of Rhode Island!"

Yes. Do you remember the Lindbergh 'mail-pilot' story about bailing out of his aircraft at night, during a thunderstorm? The one where he bailed out, chute opened, comfortable descent... and then he noticed that his mail plane was slightly above him, going down in a very slow spiral that just about matched his parachute rate going down.
