In life, Azerbal was a powerful goblin mage, who sold his services for sacrifices. An individual would leave out the offering and perform the summoning ritual. Azerbal, once arrived, would use his powers to grant a wish. He could be called across worlds and dimensions to aid mortals and other mages alike.

Having died in a foreign world while aiding the summoner, he was under the jurisdiction of the gods who ruled over that mortal realm. Rather than other options, Azerbal chose to allow his spirit to persist after death, with the exception of now serving an immortal of sin in the underworld, thus classifying him as a demon.
