“Before you judge me, my past, or my character…walk in my shoes. Walk the path I have traveled, live my sorrow, my doubts, my fears, my pain, and my laughter. When you’ve lived my life, then you can judge me…”
“I heard she took down an entire clan AND their leader…”
“That’s nothing! I heard she killed off some bandits that were trying to overrun a farm a few villages away…then mounted one of their bodies up on a stake as a scarecrow to keep others away!”
“Shh, quiet! She’ll hear you.”
Keeping her head down, the young samurai tried to ignore the mutters and stares of those she passed on the street, though her sensitive ears were able to pick up the faintest whisper. Whisper was used to the talk and rumors though- although most samurai were known for being loyal, honorable, and respectful to those they guarded and protected, she was a bit of a renegade and aloof…killing those she deemed were “unworthy,” regardless of their social status. As a result, most people questioned her allegiance and motives, doing their best to avoid her or wrongly crossing her path. Thankfully, it was starting to rain so most people began to disperse and head inside...except for her; she wanted to enjoy the silence of the rain a bit longer before heading back in. She was only supposed to be in the town for a few days, mostly gathering up intel on a mission she had been putting off for personal reasons, but part of her yearned to rest a bit as well.
Hearing a soft, almost inaudible meow against the rain, Whisper glanced down at her feet and noticed a cat staring up at her. Its black fur matted to its body from the rain, the cat let out another pitiful meow at Whisper. “I know what you want…” A warm, comforting smile crossed her lips as she took off her hat and held it over the cat to keep it dry. Though the rain was coming down harder now, Whisper was unphased by the rain and found it oddly soothing. The cat seemed content now as well as it began to rub up against her legs…though she wasn’t sure if it was trying to dry off or get her to pick it up. Reaching down to pet the feline, Whisper looked for any signs of tags or a collar to see if it belonged to anyone: nothing.
“Huh, you’re alone too…aren’t you? Well I guess we can both be alone then. Come on, let’s go get you dried up and fed.” Picking up the cat in one arm and carefully placing her katana back on her side, Whisper carefully cradled the feline in her arms and kept her conical covering it like an umbrella…
I love art that not only has meaning but a story behind it as well…
It’s funny, most people picture Whisper as a “no nonsense, kill now, ask questions later” type of woman….which for the most part, yeah she is. However, she rarely lets anyone, even her closest friends, see her softer, caring side. Why? Because she knows it’s not wise to let people get too close…that’s how you get hurt- or so she’d been taught and seen firsthand all her life. But she does occasionally let her nice side come out…
…she’ll still slice you in half if you look at her wrong though.
I’ve had a few people ask me is Whisper good or evil, mean or nice. As her creator, I really can’t answer that because it depends on who she’s interacting with at the time. While she does tend to come off as a hardass, stubborn, critical woman, for the most part, Whisper is –relatively- nice unless provoked or comes across someone that pushes the wrong buttons. The best way to sum up Whisper’s attitude is this quote, “I treat people they way they treat me: Some will be glad. Others should be very scared.”
Another thanks to teumes for this gorgeous piece of art! She wanted to try out a new experimental style and I couldn’t resist grabbing one…arigato gozaimasu~

You actually read the short story?
I didn't think anyone read my ramblings (first time for everything I guess...lol). Yeah, this piece has so much symbolism and emotion in it, part of the reason I enjoy it so much. Being strong and independent definitely has its drawbacks. But she realizes that and uses it to help her grow into a better person...err, furson rather
...and I'm working on it dang it! And don't worry, I still want to get some fighting art with your character one day too~

You read the story too?! What kind of madness is this where people actually read what I write and not just oogle art? *laughs*
No but seriously, I am so glad people caught the meaning behind the story...sometimes being so good at what you do isn't as great as everyone assumes it can be. It's kind of like the old saying, "It's lonely at the top..." or "don't judge a book by its cover" While she might come off as fierce and powerful to the public, she's actually easy to approach and yearning for others to understand her.
