In november of 1883 three railway workers came across a large, steaming hole in the ground. Being the adventurous sort, they decided to climb down into it and investigate, and what they found was a cave with a hotspring in the centre.
Those workers tried, and failed, to claim the hotspring for themselves. Instead, the government established a reserve of public land around the springs for “the good and health of all Canadians.”
This reserve eventually became Banff national park, thus making this cave the beginning, the very reason for the existence of the Canadian national park system.
