I’m currently working on putting together a proper introduction for him but till then I’ll share some of his info (specifically stuff NOT included in his above reference sheet) with you.

Home Life
Joey’s family has been living on the poverty line since before the pancham was born and both his parents worked full time, which meant the pancham was left in the care of his grandfathers (Kurama being a cheerful but irresponsible perpetual drunk and Joseph being well meaning but a failure as a caregiver) and his big sister Kelsey(who was already a gang leader and into street fighting about the time Joey was old enough to toddle)… naturally she ended up taking responsibility for Joey most of the time. Despite how dysfunctional was they made it work… in part because Joey never really understood how his situation was different from other kids till much later on. The fact the rest of Kelsey’s “Gang” (other girls from her school) and even some of Kelsey’s rival gang leaders helped raise the little pancham is probably why Joey is so well adjusted despite his situation… or at least was well adjusted…
Schooling & The Incident
Among other problems the city Joey’s family lived in faced the school system was an unholy mess. Some time ago the schools were struggling with grades, until some elected higher-ups got the bright idea of pitting the various schools in the city against each other in regular competition, hoping that would motivate the kids more and encouraging schools to use an “us vs. them” mentality to further push it along. Unfortunately with class divides already being stark in the city and tensions between kids from different schools being high all this ended up doing was making the various pre-existing groups in the schools stop warring among themselves… and start warring against other schools. Gangs of school kids fighting in back alleys, sabotage and malicious pranks, and slander all kicked into overdrive… and worst of all the elected higher-ups that caused all this spared no expense covering it up to save their own asses. By the time it came to light, the higher-ups were thrown out of office, and someone tried to do something about it the problem was bad enough it took years to make any headway…
Which ties in closely to Joey’s schooling since his big sister was one of the most feared gang leaders at the mixed grade & middle school the pancham attended growing up. Because of this he was off limits as far as bullies were concerned… but he was also disliked by most of the student body, just because of who his sister was. This only got worse as the system that’d allowed the gang fights and inter-school competitions was slowly dismantled, leaving students no other outlet for the aggression and malice they usually directed toward the other schools except to turn it back on their fellow students. While all this was happening the rumors about Kelsey and fear of her kept Joey safe from being targeted… and generally oblivious to how much his fellow students didn’t like him. Especially since there was a whole “Crab Bucket” (or maybe Krabby Bucket) mentality among the school Joey & Kelsey went to (a very large public school) that frowned on trying to better yourself… such as getting good grades and working hard on your elective classes, both of which Joey was guilty. He worked hard to get good grades and in the battling elective so he could make his family proud.
This all came to a head in one horrible incident. One of the schools most bullied kids confronted Joey. The zangoose boy’s big brother had been a gang leader who’d gotten an undeserved reputation for cowardice, particularly from an incident where he’d faced Kelsey’s gang and lost, and it’d made the little brother a target for all kinds of bullying. Due to how emotional and upset the zangoose had been it was never confirmed whether he wanted to talk with Joey or wanted the pancham to tell the real story about what happened when their big siblings fought or if he had any violent intentions when he’d arrived… either way the rest of the students took care of that last part. Surrounding the two boys they egged them on to fight, throwing taunts and insults, bringing up their big siblings, and doing all they could to escalate the situation. Joey was just left confused and overwhelmed due to his own naivety. The zangoose on the other hand… snapped and proceeded to maul Joey to the point even the audience surrounding them screaming for their blood was left unnerved and just screaming when it was all over.
The Aftermath
This attack, especially since security cameras caught the entire incident, had severe repercussions for several people and groups. The school administration for one, since they’d been trying to ignore or cover up the blood-thirsty aggression of the students and pretend that nothing was wrong or it was the other school’s fault. The publicity from this attack destroyed that and ended up getting most of them fired and replaced, with a new administration focused on actually dealing with the problem in the school being hired. Meanwhile the zangoose boy pretty much had his life destroyed, even if no charges were pressed against him the publicity of this incident insured it’d dog him for as long as he lived… if he hadn’t crumbled in on himself when he snapped out of his rage and found out what he’d done. The resulting mental breakdown was bad enough that he is currently under suicide watch and is undergoing large amounts of therapy to prevent him from breaking further under his own guilt. Of course, the one who was most affected by all this was Joey…
Especially since the zangoose had driven his claws INTO the pancham during the assault, doing extreme damage to his insides that forced Joey to spend several months in the hospital undergoing intensive surgery to try and patch him back together to some degree (with Kelsey’s friends chipping in to help pay since his family would never be able to afford it otherwise). While most of it could be repaired to a degree, and the damage to Joey’s legs could recover with time and exercise, the deepest stab had damaged Joey’s bladder badly and the best the doctors could manage left the pancham back in diapers. Which coupled with having to relearn to walk and the resulting baby fat gained from being trapped in a hospitable bed that long did wonders to completely destroy any self-confidence or self-esteem the pancham had possessed. The cruel reception Joey received when he’d recovered enough and finally returned to his school just help crush him even further…
Joey’s Goals
Before the incident happened Joey’s goal in life was to get good grades, train hard, and maybe get into the pro-leagues when he got old enough to try and help support his family… or, if failing that, then get another job somewhere and use that to help support them. This is why he worked so hard to keep his grades up, trained and practiced so hard for his battle elective, and just generally motivated the pancham to push onwards. The fact Kelsey readily approved of this idea, due to her own failings to be able to help the family, just convinced Joey to work all the harder. Since the incident though Joey’s dream has been pretty well dashed into pieces since he can’t even see himself ever wearing big boy undies again let alone working a well paying job…
The fact nearly all the students in his school either pity him or take sadistic glee in tormenting and bullying him has helped crush any hope Joey had of things getting any better. Especially since the pancham was kicked out of the battling elective via vote from the other members, who’d also sidelined him despite the doctors saying it was okay to battle when Joey returned to school. Feeling like the whole world was against him it took Kelsey forcing him out of bed each morning to get Joey to go to school… at least until recently. In an effort to make amends (or prevent a possible suicide on their watch) the new administration arranged for a transfer, offering to send Joey to a different high school to allow the panda to escape all of this. They were even able to pull the pancham’s grades and battle records (from before the attack) to help secure a scholarship for him. With all this Joey has the slightest glimmer of hope that things might get better…
As he and Kelsey prepare to travel to Kanto for Joey to attend the Pokemon Combat Academy.
Aaaaaaaaand that’s all of Joey’s story I can share with you right now =3 further details will be given when I finish and post up his introduction story proper ^_^ so those of you that are curious will have to wait until then…
Oooooooooooor if you want you can try to find out now~ Cause I’m opening an official Q & A session right here and right now for Joey! =D Feel free to ask him about his family, his hobbies, his interest, the outfits picture in his ref, how he feels about his new undies, etc~ He’ll do his best to answer you… maybe… keep the questions within reason and keep in mind the little panda IS still traumatized from what happened and you should be fine.
With all that said I hope you enjoy, please fav and comment, and have a great day! =D
