Last weekend I just had to get out and drive. It was sort of a combination victory drive and shakedown test of the OEM Navigation unit I swapped into the R (heh heh), so what better way to make the little gyro inside it scream than to twist my way up Angeles Crest Highway. I also got a feel for the new Nitto tires my (new) mechanic suggested, and I really like them. They feel a lot more sure-footed and precise.
Anyhow, I had hoped the highway would be open all the way through... I heard a rumor it was. Alas, it was closed in the place I've found it closed for almost the last five years. I sent these pictures out in an e-mail to friends and family, and my sister replied saying she thought she heard part of the highway had washed out years ago, and those in charge either can't or won't or don't want to repair it. Shame... I haven't been over the full length of the highway since I owned the Corrado.
The highway is closed at a parking lot for a trail head, just after the only tunnel. So once I got up there, I stopped to marvel at the scenery and take some pictures. I only had my cell phone on me, but they still came out pretty good. I especially like the 'Road Closed' picture (yes, good luck going on from there) and the picnic table/pit toilets being snowed in (good thing I didn't have to use the toilet). It was a nice 40*F up there, actually warmer than some parts of the road on the way up.
That's one thing I admit that I like about this area of Southern California. I started in the San Fernando Valley, maybe 60*F and 1200 feet. Over the course of Angeles Crest you pass over Cloudburst Summit (~7300 feet) and the temperature drops to 4 degrees above freezing. Heck, there was at least one ski area open, with the lift running and everything. Not bad for an hour's drive.
Next time I think I'll spring for a day-pass so I can park up there and hike around. I figure I can hike up the closed road (another suggestion from my sister) and then hit Newcomb's Ranch on the way home. I've passed Newcomb's Ranch restaurant so many times going up and down the highway and never stopped. I think it's time. ^_^
