A close-up of Nick's face begins the scene as he's walking down the sidewalk in Savannah Central with a proud smirk across his face. Finnick, wearing his normal citizen attire, walks next to him. Nick however, is wearing a very dark-green pair of overalls with a badge that reads; "ZPD Janitorial Manager". As they both walk down the street, a few Zootopia citizens that they pass recognize Nick and express confusion as to why he's wearing the overalls instead of his police uniform. One citizen, an elephant, was so shocked by his appearance that he couldn't help but ask: "Nick Wilde?"
"That's my name," said Nick still smirking as he looked up at the elephant, "Don't wear it out." The elephant stood dumbfounded and then awkwardly moved on. As he and Finnick reached a long alleyway in between an apartment building and bike shop, they stopped. Nick and Finnick then looked at each other. "You sure this is the place?"
"Trust me," said Finnick, "These guys' intel is always right." Finnick began to walk into the alley with Nick behind him. As they reached the center of the alley that formed into a four-way intersection, Finnick looked up to the top of the two buildings in front of them. Both of which were old brick buildings. "Yo," he shouted, "We hear this is the place to get fake IDs of all kinds!"
"You heard right," said a masculine voice from up above them, "Be right there." Looking up from where the voice was coming from, Nick and Finnick watched a figure emerge from a four story window of the building on the left, and then slide down a pipe on the side of the building. When the figure landed safely on the ground, he was revealed to be a young mongoose sporting a grey hoodie and pants and white t-shirt. "The name's Bradley Mongoose Xander. Friends call me 'Brad'."
Nick extended his hand to Bradley. "Then may I call you Brad?"
"That depends," said Bradley sarcastically as he put both his hands in his hoodie pockets, "Can I trust the two of you?"
"Hey," said Nick calmingly and holding up his hands defensively, "We ain't no cops kid."
"Oh really?" Bradley cautiously took a couple of steps back. "Because from what I can see, you're Nick Wilde. One of the two hero cops and partner to the other one. Judy Hopps."
Nick placed his hands on his sides and chuckled softly. "Kid come on. I'm wearing janitor coveralls. I even have a badge hear to prove it." Nick unclipped his badge and handed it to Bradley. "If you are who my friend here says you are, you can tell that it's real."
Bradley examined the badge and could tell that it was indeed real. Mild surprise could be seen across his face. "Well I'll be a donkey's uncle. So the great Nick Wilde's been demoted." He handed the badge back to Nick. "What happened?"
"Let's just say that Chief Bogo doesn't like being talked back to." Nick clipped his badge back on to his coveralls. "So, think you can make me another ZPD badge?"
"Why? It's not like Bogo's going to let you play cop just because you carry around another badge."
"Donuts." Bradley looked confusedly at Nick. "Every other Wednesday, cops get a free box of donuts. All I need to keep getting these said boxes is a badge. Oh and don't worry about if word gets out that Bogo put me on janitorial work. I used to be a con artist. I'll be able to get free donuts for at least a few months."
Bradley looked down at Finnick. "Trust me, he can do that."
Bradley pondered for a brief moment and then came to a conclusion. "Alright then. Step into me office."
Nick and Finnick looked around left and right. "What office?" Bradley held up his left index finger while sporting a smug smile. He then walked over to the same building he came out of and and pushed a single brick inward. Something metallic could be heard clicking into place as a portion of the brick wall spun around to reveal a table with a work station on it. "Ooo, fancy."
"Took me a few months of client pay to put that neat little trick together. Thought if I made my place of business look more like something out of the movies, they'd take me more seriously." He gently patted the rotating wall behind his work station. "It was pretty easy to set up actually. Plus it's just wood painted to look like it's brick. There used to be a hole here which made it all the easier to set up."
"Clever," said Nick with a impressed grin, "So how about we get to business?" Nick and Finnick then walked up to Bradley's table.
"Now you know," said Bradley mildly sarcastic, "It'll cost a little extra to make one from scratch. Unless of course you have the original for me to copy off of, which I don't think that's even-"
"Actually," said Nick, "Check this out." He reached into his pocket and then placed his badge on the table.
Bradley looked moderately surprised. It took him a few moments to gather his thoughts. "How...why do you still have that?"
"Get this," said Nick trying to hold back laughter, "Bogo was so furious with me and so eager to demote me, that he actually forgot to ask for my badge." Nick chuckled softly while still trying not to laugh completely. "Can you believe that!? So pretty much if I give him back the real one today after I get the fake one, I'll look less suspicious when I get my free donuts."
Bradley was so impressed with Nick's plan that he couldn't help but offer him a fist-bump. "That's pretty clever Wilde. Just for that, I think I'll give you a discount. Let me just go ahead and get things started here." As Bradley turned on some of his equipment, Nick stood there hunched over the table with his left arm. He broke the momentary silence after he looked down at Finnick.
"You sure have been quite for a while. Somethin' eatin' yah pal?"
Finnick looked up at Nick. "Hey, you're the one getting a fake cop badge, not me."
"Okay," said Bradley, "With the discount and the fact that a police badge is a pretty big order, the total for a forged one will be ninety-five bucks."
"Sounds fair," said Nick, "Let me just grab my wallet and..." He felt around his pockets frantically. "Oh no are you kidding me I don't have my wallet!?"
Bradley's expression soon went from impressed to annoyed. "Well that's a pretty big bummer."
Finnick pulled on Nick's sleeve. "Maybe you left it in your other pocket."
"Hey yeah," said Nick gently hitting his forehead with his palm,"Good thinking." Nick then unzipped his coveralls and removed them to reveal that he was still wearing his cop uniform. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his wallet. Setting it down on the table, he then looked at Bradley continued to hunch over the table while sporting a grin.
"Hey," said Bradley jokingly, "You still have the uniform too. What, was Bogo really that mad that he even forgot to tell you to turn that in too along with...your......badge...?" Nick looked at him dead on and his grin turned into a smug smile as he gestured his eyebrows up and down twice. "CRUD!" Bradley turned and made a run for the alley behind him.
"Ha ha, I love it when they play hard to get!" Nick then started to run after him.
As they both ran down the alley and around the corner of the brick building on the right, Finnick stayed behind with an emotionless expression across his face. "Guess I'll just stay here and wait then."
Back with Nick giving chase, both he and Bradley ran past the same elephant that Nick and Finnick had past before. Seeing Nick chasing after another animal while in his police uniform made him even more confused. "Nick Wilde!?"
Nick quickly turned around and continued to run, but backwards. "Like I said! Don't wear it out!" Pure excitement could be heard in his voice as he then turned back around and continued to chase after Bradley. They ran across a four-way intersection that was backed up from construction work. Different vehicles of all shapes and sizes for different animals were all crowded together. It was like running through a smaller version of the city itself.
"You're never gonna catch me Wilde!"
"That's what they all say! Right before I catch them!" Once they left the crowded intersection they were back to running on the sidewalk. This time they were running past and dodging other animals of all shapes and sizes. Nick reached for his walkie in his back pocket. "We're heading down Stampede Street! Be ready partner!" Bradley turned the corner and ran down Stampede Street just as Nick had said. As they headed down the sidewalk, the left side had more construction being done as the workers stopped briefly to watch the chase. Bradley looked behind him to still see Nick chasing him, and with a confident expression looking right at him. When he turned back around to see the end of the sidewalk, he didn't take to notice the back end of a police cruiser and the rabbit's foot sticking out from behind the corner of the last building and tripped over it. He tumbled onto a makeshift wooden ramp and found himself rolling into the back of the cruiser. Judy Hopps then moved the rank back and slammed the door shut as Nick reached the end of the sidewalk and caught his breath.
Judy placed her hands on her hips and scoffed politely. "I can't believe that actually worked."
"Told you so." Nick gently patted her on the back. They then walked up to edge of the ramp and looked up at the slightly rolled down window. An enraged Bradley could be seen pressing his face against the glass and fogging up the window with his nostrils. "Bradley Mongoose Xander, you are under arrest for the forging and distribution of false IDs to the general public. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
"I knew I should've ran the moment I saw you down there in the alley Wilde! But nOOOooo I just had to hear you out! You tricked me!"
"It's called a hustle kid."
Judy gently elbowed him in his right arm. "Nick," she said playfully, "I thought we agreed that sounds better when I say it."
"Let's agree to disagree Carrots."Judy gave him a gentle punch to arm as they both laughed together.
The scene fades to the exterior of an apartment building at night. Finnick's van can be seen parked along the sidewalk with other vehicles. It then cuts to the interior of an apartment room door being opened from the other side by Nick, of which he and Judy are now dressed in their civilian clothes. She and Finnick stood behind him as he made his way inside and fell face first into the dark green couch in front of him. Lifting his face up from the couch cushion, he smiled and spoke in a quiet, relaxed voice. "Sooooo comfy." He turned over onto his back and closed his eyes. "I don't think I'm ever going to get used to this level of comfort Carrots."
Judy smiled and rolled her eyes at Nick. She turned around to look at Finnick. "You know Finnick, there's still enough room in here for you too. We could split rent three ways."
"Nah," he said politely, "I'm not ready for the roommate life yet. Besides, I kinda like the solitude." He let out a yawn and stretched his arms. "Well, I'll see you two tomorrow for another carpool session."
Judy extended her hand to him and he shook it. "Hopefully tomorrow you can find a place to set up shop finally."
"My fingers and toes are crossed on that one. See yah." Judy waved him goodbye and shut the door. She sat down in the chair to the right of the couch and let out a relaxed sigh. She looked over at Nick who was stretched out with his hands behind his head.
"Now I know I've said this once today but I'm going to say it again: I can't believe that actually worked."
Nick chuckled and then opened his eyes to look at Judy. "I can't believe it did either to tell you the truth. I was just as surprised as you. I just didn't want to show it in public."
"I had a feeling you were faking it. But still though, you impressed Chief Bogo. He didn't think it would work at all. But I do have to ask you, why not just arrest him after he revealed the location of his forging equipment? Why ensue a chase?"
"I gave him a choice," said Nick disappointingly, "He could either make it easier or harder for himself. He choose to make it harder by resisting arrest and attempted to flee." Judy looked on in mild concern. "Part of me just wants to see them accept the consequences of the choices thru made...rather than try to run from them." The room went quiet for a few moments until Nick broke the awkward silence by changing the subject. "Anyway, it was still a pretty clever plan. I knew he'd take the alley behind him."
"That he'd try to lose you in the backed-up traffic."
"Then when that didn't work he'd try to shake me through a crowd of animals."
"Then he'd try to lose you around the corner onto Stampede Street, where he'd have no choice but to stay on the right side due to the sidewalk construction."
"And he'd be so focused on trying to lose me, he wouldn't notice you and our cruiser waiting for him at the end." Judy chuckled. "What's so funny?"
"That ramp trick." She covered her mouth in an attempt to contain most of her laughter. "That's the part I find the hardest to believe here! It's going to make quite the story back home."
"It sure will." Nick stretched out his arms and let out a big yawn. "But for now I think we best be headin' to bed."
Judy hopped down off the chair and headed for the back room. She stopped after she past the couch. "Just don't sleep in your normal clothes again. It's weird."
"Don't worry MOM, I'll get into my PJ's before I hit the sack."
Judy playfully scoffed. "Goodnight officer dumb fox."
"Goodnight officer sly bunny." Judy continued to make her way to the back room. The scene cuts to the outside of the apartment building with only their window still lit up. The light then goes out and the scene fades to black.
"That's my name," said Nick still smirking as he looked up at the elephant, "Don't wear it out." The elephant stood dumbfounded and then awkwardly moved on.
