This is the rusted carcass of the British bark Peter Iredale. The 2075-ton bark was en route to Portland, Oregon with a shipment of wheat, when it ran aground on Clatsop Spit early in the morning of October 25, 1906. No lives were lost, and the shipment of wheat was removed. It was actually still in good enough shape to be salvaged and towed back to sea, but weeks passed, and the desired weather and ocean conditions were never met. The Iredale eventually listed on its port and settled in the sand, abandoning any hope of salvage.
The Peter Iredale still rests on the shores of Clatsop Beach, where it has become a tourist attraction.
I actually knew this offhand. Despite being a slob with a pregnancy fetish, I am very familiar with shipwrecks of the Northwest Pacific coastline. And yes, the picture was taken by me.
