A Lovely Time in Larbordale
By Tyrex Kyuris
Lexal finished tying the tether to a steel hook on the back of his wetsuit and jumped off the ferry into the salty spray of the sea. It was a pretty long tether so he could get his seaventure on without losing track of the boat. He was really hoping to come across some breakfast out in the sea like some nice mackerel he could have for breakfast but he wasn't gonna get his hopes up. But in all honestly, the shark just wanted something to do
The sea was a rich soft blue - if he hadn't been coming with Tyrex, he might have just made this trip underwater. But it was nice being able to get out of the water, that was certain.
He felt the tether start to pull him in. Hang on, there's no way he had swum to the end of it, he could still see the boat! Aaaah. He saw a familiar blue dragon above the water cranking the large reel for his tether.
"Tyrex I was getting my swim on!" Lexal started climbing up the side of the ship.
"We're here." Tyrex unhooked Lexal's tether as the shark peered out at the approaching landmass.
"I mean we're not there now." Lexal looked back at Tyrex. "You could have let me keep swimming a bit longer."
"Get your gear." Tyrex tapped his own rucksack. "They want us to empty out our rooms."
"Ooooh." Lexal grinned with a bit of a nervous laugh. "Um... don't hate me, but... um..."
"You didn't bring any gear, did you?" Tyrex crossed his arms and gave lexal a flat stare.
"It's an adventure! I brought my wallet and I thought we'd just buy gear in town before we head out!" Lexal patted his pockets. "Oh... fuck." He looked back out to the sea. "Must have fallen out of my pocket while I was swimming."
Tyrex started laughing. "You are so unprepared for anything, Lexal!" He shook his head. "Well I kind of guessed you'd screw that up so I brought some extra supplies to cover you." He opened up his backpack.
"Hey shut up..." Lexal pouted. "We'll be fine!"
"Let's see..." Tyrex started taking stuff out of his backpack. "I've got a first aid kit, some rope, compass, and most importantly..." He pulled out several small plastic bars. "Plenty of deodorant for you!" Lexal picked up Tyrex's bag and tossed it into the sea. "HEY!!"
"I didn't want to sit here and listen to all your cheesy teases you packed." Lexal stuck his tongue out. "I'm sure you also had like a million toothbrushes for all my teeth and a footstool so I can reach high shelves too HA HA HA!"
Tyrex pondered. "Dang a footstool would have been good..." He remembered he had just lost his pack. "Dammit Lexal my money was in there!"
Lexal shrugged. "I'll go get it." He started back for the edge of the ferry but was stopped by one of the ship's ferrymen.
"I'm sorry, we need all the passengers to the front to disembark."
"But I just lost my bag." The ferryman looked back out to the water.
"I don't see it." Lexal looked out and there was no trace of Tyrex's backpack. He looked back at the cross dragon.
"Um... oops?"
"All my stuff was in there, including our return tickets and passports." Lexal shrugged.
"Whatever. Let's start this adventure!"
The two disembarked from the ferry into the harbor. Tyrex immediately sat down on the docks. "Wait, what are you doing?" Lexal sat down.
"We don't have any papers to, you know, enter town?"
"Short on papers?" The two looked up at a gray wolf leaning against one of the harbor lamp posts. He had been watching passengers disembark whilist puffing on a wooden pipe. "I can help you two out." He reached into the pockets of his long green overcoat and removed two small booklets. "Well... I might be able to help you two out." He took another pull from the pipe and let out a small cloud of sparkling green smoke. Lexal stepped over to get a closer look at the tall, slender canine. He had fiercely sharp, intelligent eyes and a grizzled muzzle of a wolf who had survived on his wits, not his hunting prowess.
"What can you help us with?"
"Well, just about anything, actually." He grinned and took another puff from his pipe. "If you two don't have your papers, I can get you some. And not some backalley forgeries, mind you. Real papers." He tapped his pipe slightly.
"What do you want in return, though?" Said Tyrex.
"Ah, see that's the thing. I had you two pegged for adventurers." The wolf's ears raised. "And I like to strike deals with adventurers. You know, I help them out, they give me a cut of their booty."
"Oh." Tyrex looked at Lexal. "Is there some sort of contract you'd like us to sign?"
"As a matter of fact, there is." The wolf removed the pipe from his mouth and waved it through the air, brandishing the emerald mouthpiece. Paper contracts appeared in the duo's hands. Lexal took a look at his.
"Um... you mind summarizing it for me?" He grinned hopefully as Tyrex flipped the book open. "I'm not a fast reader."
"Sure thing. I'll provide you two with papers, a place to stay, and considering you don't have any gear, some basic adventurer tools to get you started. In return, you give me a cut of anything you haul back from the land. Now, I'm putting down a lot of resources, so I do insist that you don't leave until you've repayed me at least to a certain amount." He winked. "Normally there's some sort of idle threat behind that, but these contracts make that very much unnecessary. Basically once you sign, you'll be brought back to town by a handly little spell if you try to leave." He returned the pipe to his mouth and took another puff. "Read it all you like, Mr. Dragon. I assure you it's what I've said it is."
"No, I believe you." Tyrex continued reading. "This is surprisingly... fair so far." The wolf grinned as Tyrex went back to reading.
"Ah, the cautious type."
"Tyrex hurry up!" Lexal flipped through as fast as he could. "Where do I sign?"
"Ah, this spell doesn't work with signatures. Just an imprint of your hand on the front cover." He waved his pipe wand and a small orb of black ink appeared in front of Lexal's hand. He placed his palm on it and pressed it into the top of the contract. He looked over to see Tyrex waving the orb of ink away and turning another page.
"Tyrex that thing's a phone book c'mon!!!"
"I'm trying to read." Tyrex continued staring at the pages. "I don't get it. I mean you're putting a lot of faith that we'll be any good as adventurers."
"The lands around Larbordale have plenty of treasure; adventuring skill isn't necessary for a nice haul. I just need folks willing to go out there and bring it back."
"Yeah, Tyrex!" Lexal glared at Tyrex. "Stop questioning it and sign it like I did! What, do you read the iTunes terms and conditions every week when they make new ones?"
"You're slowing the reading down, Lexal." Tyrex flipped another page.
"C'mon, Tyrex!" Lexal grabbed Tyrex by the shoulders. "This is all time we could be adventuring!" Tyrex rolled his eyes. Lexal knew what that meant and let go to clap his hands. "Yaaaay!!!"
"Fine, I'll sign it." Tyrex pushed an inky handprint into the cover of the contract as the wolf wizard's grin widened.
"Fantastic! I'm Medoleus, Grand Wizard of Larbordale, and it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance." He offered his paw to each of them to shake.
"Um... Tyrex."
"Ah, Master Tyrex, and..." Lexal shook Medoleus' paw.
"Lexal Hunter."
"Excellent. If you'd like to follow me, I'll show you to your lodgings." He turned to walk, flicking his ashen tail. He immediately stopped. "You know, I don't want to walk that far. I'll just teleport is." He waved his pipe wand again and the world flashed green for a moment.
Lexal opened his eyes to find himself standing in a very moderate small bungalow overlooking the harbor. It was basically a big room with two beds in which he watched Tyrex poof into in a flurry of green smoke. The wizard wolf had a bit more grand of an entrance, lighting up the room with a shower of colorful sparks.
"Ah, welcome to Medoleus Acres. It's right at the edge of town, so you don't have to go far to head out and begin your adventures. You each have a bed, there's a small kitchen, bathroom..." He snapped his fingers and packages appeared on the beds. "Ah. Your gear. Now I have three beginner sets for you to start out with, it's all cheap stuff but if you're any good you'll be able to buy better gear very soon" Lexal looked at the little boxes. They were done up with cute green paper with small insignias on the paper. There was a sword and shield, a bow, and a book on the three packages.
He heard the sound of crinkling paper and looked over to see Tyrex unwrapping the book package and removing a single spellbook.
"Oh! You got one of my early folios from back when I was first learning the craft..." Medoleus clapped Tyrex on the shoulder heartily. "Planning on learning some spells? I suggest lots of practice, young Master Tyrex."
"I'll figure it out." Tyrex sat down on the bed and began reading as Lexal took the bow box. He opened it up to find... nothing.
"Sorry, I like symbolism of choosing that but a bow won't actually fit in that little box." Medoleus flicked the mouthpiece of his pipe wand at a rack by the door and a bow and quiver of arrows fell into place ouf a shimmering green mist. "Again. Not the most luxurious gear available. And we in fact have master craftsmen in down who, once you start bringing in that sweet, fat loot, can make you significantly better gear to work with." He tapped his nose. "So the better you two do out there the better things will be around here. But don't forget to have fun, Larbordale is a wonderful fulfilling place and you're sure to have lots of great adventures. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got other adventurers to check on." And with that, Medoleus was gone, leaving Tyrex and Lexal to look at one another.
"Well... I mean..."
"Yeah, it was a long boat ride and I'm itching for something to do, let's go." Tyrex looked over the book. "I think I have this basically figured out." He clenched his hand and an orb of water appeared inside. "It's a water pressure spellbook." Lexal took down the bow and slung the quiver over his shoulder.
"Do you want to check out town first?"
"Why? We're broke." Tyrex started along the pathway outside their bungalow, marked distinctly 'to town gates.'
Lexal followed but took an interested note as he looked around. There were many bungalows here, but he didn't see any other adventurers. Perhaps the wizard was still getting started. In any case, he felt incredibly excited and ready to begin as they stepped out the stone walls and began on the path to adventure.
Larbordale was, in fact, beautiful. The path led them into a selection of lovely rolling hills, rich emerald in color for their verdant grass and only lightly disturbed by the occasional ripple of harbor breezes fleeting by. Even though hills loomed up high on either side of them, Lexal felt comfortable on the path as he led the group. He had his bow at the ready with an arrow ready to fly, but he just felt incredibly relaxed.
A sound brought the shark from his reverie as he pulled the arrow back slightly on the string. Tyrex almost bumped into him, distracted likely by the same scenery. "Hey!"
"Shhh." Lexal pulled the bow back and shot an arrow into a large berry bush by the path. He heard the squelch of an arrow hitting a target. "What was that?" Tyrex shook his head.
"Probably just a poor little bunny or something, jumpy." He stepped over to check the bush. As he stepped closer, Lexal watched Tyrex stumble on a vine and tumble into the bush. It was just a little bit hilarious watching him fall in with a yelp.
"I may be jumpy, but you're trippy!" Lexal chuckled to himself. "Tyrex?" There was a loud rustling and shuddering from the bushes. The shark started to edge closer but felt his foot land in something wet and sticky. Funny, there hadn't been any rain. He looked down to see his foot sticking in a basketball sized globule of green ooze. "What the-" He didn't have time to finish his sentence as the ooze snaked up his body and halted his sentence with a mouthful of puckering sour apple flavor. Wow this thing was fast! Lexal barely had time to register that it was charging in before he felt the goop sliding down his throat and a slight gurgle from his belly. He looked down at his stomach. It felt like it was much tighter in there than it had been previously. He returned his gaze to the bush where Tyrex had fallen; perhaps one had found his friend?
A slight squelch caused the shark to turn back and see a couch cushion sized orange glob rapidly sliding up his tail until-OMPH!!! His mouth was crammed full of citrus goo and shortly afterwards, his stomach was too. Lexal groaned and felt his stomach strain against the fabric of his hoodie, emerging from the confines of the cloth like a big white squishy watermelon and hanging over his belt with a gooey sloshing sag.
The shark groaned meekly for Tyrex’s help and heard a commotion from the bushes as Tyrex staggered out backwards, desperately drawing symbols in the air. His mouth was currently covered with some kind of goopy muzzle which was connected to something in the bushes itself and as the dragon continued pulling away, the bulk of a large dark purple slime began to glorp out from the foliage. Large oozing pulses of slime were moving along the tendril connecting the bulk of the main body to Tyrex’s mouth and from the looks of his belly, he had already received quite a hefty portion of the ooze. His gut jiggled and swayed heavily with its beachball sized load of ooze and the panic in Tyrex’s eyes was apparent as he cast the spell. A jet of water launched towards the slime, but to his very apparent dismay, it smacked into the bulk of the slime and was absorbed right in, growing the slime even lar-NOMPH!
Lexal felt ooze on his legs, crawling up his tail, and cursed himself for being so enthralled watching Tyrex before his mouth was invaded by a group of the slimes all at once. He thrashed and wriggled and felt a few of them fly free, unable to maintain their grip on him, but the sounds of fabric stretching and ripping and fish scales tightening and expanding as his stomach began to cry out as more and more goo squeezed in. The seams of his hoodie burst around his gelatinous stomach and his shorts seemed not far behind, the button already having disappeared off, shot off with rocket force as his gut burst free and fell down, approaching his knees with beanbag-chair like mass. Lexal thrashed some more, swinging his tail and his belly like mad, and heard a yelp emanate from Tyrex. He opened his eyes and saw that he had flung several of the slimes onto Tyrex or the slime that held him, which were only too happy to migrate to the blue dragon’s belly instead as it creaked and groaned like a wrecking ball filled with goop.
Finally, the slimes seemed to have won. After all, there was no trace of them left, save for the shark and dragon’s massively distended stomachs. Lexal groaned and rubbed his spherical squishy stomach as it rested on the ground, spreading his legs wide apart and reaching out, squishing against his calves and jiggling with the hustle and bustle of slimes settling into a new home. His clothes lay in ruins on the ground, no match for his newfound girth. He let out a series of bubbly belches and looked over at his friend. Tyrex had received the worst of it thanks to that dark purple ooze pumping him like a water balloon while Lexal had inadvertently thrown more onto him. He was lying atop his belly, beached there, neither his arms nor his legs quite able to reach the ground as the sofa-sized orb below him wobbled and jiggled. It was quiet save for the ‘blorbling’ sound effects of slimes squishing each other around to get comfortable until a raucous ‘uuUUUUUUUUUURRRRP’ seemed to crack the sky open as Tyrex let out a jam-packed belch.
“Uuuh… now what?” Lexal rubbed his belly to soothe the wobbling.
“I… dunno…” Tyrex mumbled weakly. He didn’t look very focused at the moment. In fact he looked like he was having trouble keeping his eyes open. He opened his mouth and let out a long dreary yawn.
“Don’t do that you’re gonna get me-” Lexal stopped to let out a long yawn, feeling his eyelids grow as heavy as his belly felt.
“Oh that’s contagious you’re gonna…” Tyrex opened his mouth again and a small baseball sized slime wriggled up his belly and plunged into his yawn, stifling it and adding to his already massive waist with a GLORP!!
The sun was low in the sky when Lexal’s eyelids flitted back open. He immediately began to recall the recent gastro invasion and flailed slightly for fear of more slimes, but his wobbling arms hit nothing… wobbling arms?
Lexal looked down and felt the sharkskin beneath his chin squish and fold as he came in view of his belly. It did not take much to see it; his stomach had gone from its original muscular tone to a massive bhudda belly that hung low between his knees. He prodded it; his stomach sloshed and let out a mild gurgle but the slimes inside seemed to have vanished. Or rather, they had migrated elsewhere. As his arm ran over the smooth expanse of pale shark belly he noticed how much pudgier his arm was, the muscle mass swallowed up by layer upon layer of pudge adding soft wobbly jiggling to every motion. His tail felt squishy and thick behind him and from the feel, it was poking out between two very ample cheeks on his derierre. He let out a groan and heard a tired yawn.
Well, upon seeing Tyrex, thought Lexal. It wasn’t that bad. At least he had ended up thinner than Tyrex. He looked like he had just come from a lifestyle that mandated fourteen meals a day, all of them magnificent. Once the blue dragon struggled to get on his feet, his gut dipped dangerously close to the dirt of the road, wider than a fruit stand and oh so jiggly from the looks of it. His other features had received a great deal of fresh new lard that stretched his scales out seemingly everywhere.
“Son of a bitch!” Tyrex exclaimed with his new double chin bobbing and the anger to set waves of lard rippling throughout his bulk. “We’re here five minutes and I feel like CALLUM after a binge night!”
Lexal reached out and poked at the mass of dragon. “I dunno. I don’t even think Callum’s that big.”
“You’re not helping.” Tyrex groaned and rubbed the bridge of his nose with pudgy fingers. “Okay, okay. We can’t adventure like this, we’ll be sitting ducks. And if there’s any more slimes, lord help us.” A loud grumble interrupted them. Tyrex looked around, eyes widening. “What was that?”
“My tummy…” Lexal clutched his huge belly as it let out a starved growl. “I’m starving!”
Tyrex scowled but a loud roar soon emanated from his own massive middle. “We need to get back to town. If nothing else… we can get a meal there….” He flinched at the words. “No, I mean, we can get help there….” Lexal nodded. His brain told him no, but he was really hoping more for the first thing Tyrex had said.
It was early in the morning when the two heavily fattened adventurers waddled back through the town gates. The guards whooped and clapped for them; Tyrex waved them off in disdain but Lexal looked. They didn’t seem to be jeering, they actually seemed like they were excited to see them.
They weren’t far through the gates when Lexal felt a fuzzy paw clasp on his arm. “Hey there big boy…” He looked over to see a goat squishing his arm eagerly. “You got quite a lot of lard on you, don’t you? How’d you like to become a rich fish?” Lexal was about to say something, but a loud hungry gurgle from Tyrex’s stomach interrupted his thoughts and he looked over to see a deer giving Tyrex a belly rub much to the dragon’s protests.
“Ooh, you are just a goldmine, aren’t you? How’d you like to sell this to me.” The deer squished on Tyrex’s belly and merited a blast of water in the face. “Hey! That’s no way to treat a potential buyer!”
“Enough!” Both Lexal and Tyrex flinched and turned to see Medoleus behind them. His appearance was much less suave with moon and star footie pajamas on and a matching nightcap but it seemed to be more than enough to scare off the furs surrounding them. “My two new friends! You seemed to have been even more successful than I thought!” He put his hands on their flab-packed shoulders.
“Successful?” Said Tyrex. “We got ambushed by slimes!”
“If only we all were so lucky…” Said Medoleus, clicking his tongue. “You look confused… perhaps I should explain.” Green smoke began to cloud around the trio and everything smelled like magic for a moment.
A few moments later, Lexal happily shoved sushi rolls in his mouth while an apparatus attached to his belly sparked with electricity. His vast gut was shrinking bit by bit as he ate and every so often, a crystal would fall out of the device and onto a little cloth bag. Tyrex had chosen against food and simply sat there, watching the apparatus on his stomach extract the fat from his body.
“This sushi is delicious! Tyrex come on, let Medoleus order you some too!” Lexal said in-between bites. “And we’re getting the weight loss too, you don’t have to worry about your figure!!”
Tyrex had the contract in his hands again as Medoleus patiently waited for him to read. “You see, my friends, Larbordale is a land of plenty. So much, in fact, that waists have a tendency to grow quite rapidly around here. At first, of course, it seemed like a new lifestyle. Wider doors, sturdier houses, move on with one’s life. But then everyone started getting too fat to work. So our brilliant wizard minds had to get to work.” He picked up one of the crystals that had fallen from the apparatus on Lexal’s stomach. “This was our solution.” He held it up in the light. The crystal wasn’t particularly pretty to the eye, but the gleam in Medoleus’ told Tyrex it had value beyond the aesthetic.
“Fat crystals?”
“To put it simply, yes. The apparatus extracts all the excess lard from your body and condenses it into these crystals.” Medoleus opened his desk and removed a small black box on a watch chain. “It was discovered that these crystals can use the energy of the fat composing them for all sorts of thing. All the lights in town are powered by crystals brought back from adventurers like you.” He pushed the crystal into the back of the box and the front began to glow with an eerie aqua pulse. “It’s even pushed incredible new creations.” He picked up a heavy book and touched the tip to the pulsating front of the box. The box was enveloped with the aqua glow and then disappeared with a flit of light. “This is just one of the technologies we can make with the fat from adventurers.” He slid the box forward on the table and removed another from his desk. “I call it the micro backpack. It can hold quite a lot for a tiny box.” Tyrex stared at the offered object and blinked. “Take it, they might prove useful to you.”
“When you said a cut of our booty…”
“I was being literal.” Medoleus smiled. “Did you think I was some shady crooked warlock? Of course not!” The apparatus chimed and fell off Lexal’s stomach, which had shrunk town to its original toned shape, and spat out a final small crystal. “Now these crystals are quite valuable, but we don’t trade these directly.” He slid them into a box and shut it in a safe behind him before removing a bag of coins from the safe. “Now, if you consider your lodging, starting gear, and, erm… rescue fees into account, you’ll find that I’m paying you the going rate for fat.” He removed several round gold coins from the bag, adding silver and copper. “This was an impressive haul. I believe this was a fantastic choice on both our ends.” Tyrex’s stomach gurgled and Medoleus clucked his tongue sympathetically.
“Does this thing work any faster?” Tyrex gave his remaining pudge a shake and looked up at the wizard.
“Easy now, Master Tyrex. The Crystalardzer is making you slender again as fast as it can.” Medoleus gave it a tap. “And you really should eat something. The fat those slimes gave you may be coming out, but the hunger inducing enzymes they release is still tucked away.”
“I ate more than enough recently.” Tyrex crossed his arms. Lexal shrugged.
“Sorry, Mr. Medoleus. Tyrex gets flustered and defensive when he’s fat.”
“Shut up, Lexal!” Tyrex barked, and then immediately started wringing his hands, abashed. “I’m sorry, I just…” The apparatus chimed and let out the last of its crystals and Medoleus scooped them into a box to weigh.
“It’s all right. I’ve noticed that mainlanders don’t usually take to Larbordale’s ways right away. It may take time to adjust to it. In the meantime…” Medoleus offered Tyrex his coin. “I suggest you two enjoy the spoils. Larbordale has a fantastic night life and most shops are open day and night.” He took his Crystalardzers back and gestured calmly, but firmly to the door. As they stepped out, they heard a box open. “Now, Mr. Teddy Bear, where were we?”
