While on vacation in FL, Vrghr played about a little with a non-alcoholic "cooler" to help beat the Florida heat.
Here's a simple drink, with a bit of whimsical flavor to suit a whimsical wuffy.
Orange juice and Seltzer water, with a touch of homemade Basil Syrup for the whimsical touch, and a base of homemade Grenadine to bring a tart contrast to the Orange-Basil, and add a bit of color to the bottom of the drink.
Note, this still tastes good if you stir it up, but the color isn't quite so appetizing.
You can vary the ratio of Seltzer to Orange Juice, to suit your own preferences. Wuff likes the 50/50 version, which gives a more fizzy and tart drink that cuts through the FL heat better than just the sweeter juice.
Vrghr is including the recipes for the Grenadine and Basil Syrup here too. You should really try out the Grenadine, which has a lot more "body" and complexity than the red colored sugar water you find in the "mixers" section of your store.
Cooler Directions:
Fill a juice or highball glass with ice.
Add 1-2 Tablespoons of Grenadine Syrup
Pouring together, add orange juice and seltzer water in equal parts until the glass is almost full
Add ~1 Tablespoon of Basil Syrup
!!ENJOY!!
Basil Syrup
~ 2 1/2 C Water
~ 1 1/2 C Sugar
2 bunches fresh Sweet (not Thai) Basil (~6 oz)
In a small sauce pan over high heat, stir together ~1 1/2 C granulated Sugar and 2 1/2 C Water, until all the sugar dissolves.
Bruise and twist apart 2 bunches, ~8 oz, fresh Sweet (not Thai) Basil. Add to the saucepan and make sure all the bits are submerged.
Bring mixture to a light simmer, then reduce heat to just hold at a simmer. Cover, and continue to simmer for 15 minutes to half and hour.
Remove from heat, and allow to steep until syrup reached desired flavor strength.
Strain into container, squeezing out the basil for the last of the juice.
Refrigerate until use
Grenadine
2 C pure unsweetened Pomegranate Juice
1 1/2 C Sugar
1 Tbs Lemon Juice
Optional Add-ins
1 tsp Orange Flower Water or
1 tsp Rose Water or
1 tsp Hibiscus
Pinch Ceylon Cinnamon & Nutmeg
In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the Pomegranate Juice, Lemon Juice, and Sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
Measure the level with a chopstick or toothpick. Boil gently until the level is reduced by just about 1/3. Too much and you'll turn it into pomegranate molasses!
The add ins provide floral components which improve the scent and complexity, but aren't mandatory.
If you like a more tart Grenadine, use less sugar/more juice. For sweeter, more sugar.
For thinner syrup, don't reduce the level quite as much.
Refrigerate until serving

*nods* Definitely is.
The basil syrup gives it a rather unexpected flavor component, since it looks a lot like a fizzy orange juice. But wuffy does like that odd, unexpected flavor to it. And the seltzer keeps it from becoming just a "orange punch" and being too sweet to really give a good thirst-quenching on a hot day.

That sounds like it would be fun! I suspect there's more than enough "gray muzzles" to make a go of it, as long as it's not up against another popular event (like the suiters parade).
Unfortunately, I don't think the new hotel has "cooking enabled" rooms. So Vrghr might be at a bit of a loss for prepping something. But I'm sure refreshments could be worked out!
