HEHE, Yes the soup will be ready when it is ready, not a moment sooner! Having made many a pot of beans on the boat, you learn what you can doctor them with, be it some fresh halibut or salmon and some kelp that was dried...
But what does he do when the Beans scream in revolt?
Great story and give a view that people don't think about when looking at the lowly soup.

That's right, go ahead and give me even more reason to wish I could visit. Food is the highway to my heart. It's shallow, I know, but if you feed me than we are much more likely to be friends. I think I became this way from having great home cooked meals growing up. Those legends will not be forgotten, even in the desolate wastes of bachelorhood.
An excellent story! It reminded me of this passage from Rumi:
A chickpea leaps almost over the rim of the pot
where it's being boiled.
'Why are you doing this to me?'
The cook knocks him down with the ladle.
'Don't you try to jump out.
You think I'm torturing you.
I'm giving you flavor,
so you can mix with spices and rice
and be the lovely vitality of a human being.
Remember when you drank rain in the garden.
That was for this.'
. . .
Eventually the chickpea
will say to the cook,
'Boil me some more.
Hit me with the skimming spoon.
I can't do this by myself.'
- Coleman Barks, The Essential Rumi, pp. 132-133

Speaking of beans, this is my special thing I do.
A couple of ham hocks over night, then fish out the bones and meat to give to the dog.
And a bunch of other garden "volunteers" to round it out.
