Return of the Lizardman - Hotara 2016
I can start uploading new pics on DeviantART once again, ignoring the 15k messages except the comments/replies. I did most of the artworks for FurAffinity, but mostly...you don't wanna know XD
At this time, I totally miss my first lizardman character Hotara the Shivanian sharpshooter made in 2007 (Based on Reptile Cynrik from ReptileCynrik). He had been wearing a casual citizen clothing (just loincloth and bracelets) so when he goes into the quest for King Corus and other subordinates, he suits up the full adventure gear and sets his blacksmith work aside.
This is an update design using inspirations from video games and films like Assassin's Creed, Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit, and Hunger Games.
It's been a while without submitting any original art here. It brings memories of my beloved Hotara :3
Dedicated to
and
who had been my art mentors and critics once. Thank you for growing me up. *huge wing hugs and nuzzles*

UPDATE: Quiver and bag belts are fixed, now over the hood. Thanks to :devreptilecynrik:
Also, foot wear is added. Gloves are more medieval-fantasy styled. Flawed eye level is moved to the left a little. Bowstring is now bent by forearm due to Saberbow's perspective and handling

No problem buddy! You really have gotten so much better and have come so far since I first met you. You really have become a very talented and amazing artist *gives you a wing hug back* ^ w ^
And indeed! This improvementioned is absolutely amazing! It makes your characters look even more awesome ^^

I do like the hood... that's a good accessory.
But I don't like the body build, at all! In my opinion, an archer would NOT be that buff. That's my personal opinion. I'm not against muscled guys... but this makes just NO sense to me. If Hotara were a brawler or fighting with axes or a mace... OK. But not like this.
And the design of the bow does not look very functional... it's fancy but it would NOT work, either. It looks like sharp metal blades with a string... HOW IS THAT BOW supposed to bend?? How can it bend so it can give the string and the arrow enough power to fly? This bow cannot work, sorry. Maybe, if that string would be much thicker... and the metal would partially be made of wood... or other stuff. But this cannot work right now.
1) Hood and leather protection looks great!
2) So... the body does not make sense, but it is YOUR personal thing.
3) The bow on the other hand is totally useless.

I agree with your opinion since it just your view on logical sense.
In the story, Hotara as a young boy likes to use wooden bow for target practice, but he needs to train with different kinds of weapons from Skaro, and practice wrestling from Troojhar. Muscles and scales make him tougher and he can handle the body weight, and he can throw someone off him with all his might, hehe.
As for his bow, I can't make his metallic bow structure bendable, even using gears or hinges. It has to stay solid whenever he switches uses it for melee mode by cutting off the bowstring after running out of arrows. To make his bow more functional, I've planned to add a mechanical part of his bow near the handle to make the string work with physics: something like a tape measure tool on composite bow.

ReptileCynrik, there's something I want to tell you that I can't hold it in within my heart anymore. I've seen you a couple of times giving artists advice about art but to me some of those advices looks to me like you're criticizing the art and the artist. I know that logic and physics are important in art but imagination is the most important thing in art. Those who don't follow their hearts, passion and inspiration are people who cast away their emotions and hearts. I'm an artist in training and I'm not as good as kevindragon but I just hate it when people criticize something. I know you're just giving you're honest and personal opinion and I respect that but I just can't turn my back when I'm seeing this, it makes my heart get filled with a flame of anger that can't be extinguished no matter how hard I try to make it go away. Someone once told me "If you ever feel that way, you should speak up about what you like and dislike, or if you're happy or scared. After all, you're alive."
You can't know the history of Kevin and myself... so I won't go into detail here. Rest assured, I have tried a lot of ways to give suitable advise and it didn't always work out.
Anyway, Kevin specifically asked me for my opinion - though he KNEW (from the recent years) that I would be a nitpick and come at him with logical flaws.
It is not about the art here. It is about design and functionality. Kevin WANTS his tools and weapons to work!! He really wants it to be functional and logical. And I just point out the parts which are not working, at all - because HE ASKED me to do so.
I thank you for your opinion and for speaking out. But you are way too emotional here. This comment of mine was supposed to point out flaws in design and logic. And I've known Kevin for several years... he knows me best.
P.S.: I am a professional artist and art teacher at school. I've studied this for many years and though most art around here is porn and naughty stuff, many people really want some constructive comments, as well!
And your point that I would criticize the artist is highly mistaken. I do NOT KNOW THESE PEOPLE personally - so why should I get personal? I never do. I just comment the DRAWING!
And if the drawing sucks, I say it.
And if there are horrible flaws, I tell it.
That's what I expect of other people, too.
And in the end... if you don't want any comments... then don't ask for comments.
Good day ^^

I wanted to add something which got lost somehow.
My art pupils are 10 to 16 years old and I have to give marks to their drawings. And HOW do I do that? Easy: I just look at the drawings objectively and comment on facts and flaws! I never get personal or emotional there. THIS is the only way to give a fair and understandable mark to any artwork.
If you are looking for emotional artworks, you should check expressive art... but believe me... this drawing here is just a character design. It's not about feeling, emotion or heart (though people may love the character, which is alright).

persona4q, it's Patrick's right to share criticism. He's the professional artist in real life and he's been teaching his students every day. His friends have even told me about his personality and works. You might need to know I wasn't mature enough starting 2008, my middle school life, and I had frequent fights with him and his affiliates because I've been fooling who's better and who's not okay to yell--as in self-satisfaction and self-centeredness. I learned a lesson when dealing with people until now and I can make things right when it comes to relationship, so I can listen to criticism not only from ReptileCynrik.
I do get your personal interest when it comes to art, but when someone is better than one another in reality, then it's okay to share something for inspiration. A student is okay to either accept or refuse the master's remarks and opinions WITHOUT stating arrogance to and expressing bad thoughts from a better artist. He can follow the imagination from self and be creative, but if he finds it too hard, he can seek advises from the master.
Well there is still heart, passion and inspiration even the beginners, so there is hope to improve oneself and figure out how to be confident and be brave readily with the important aspects in drawing: anatomy and proportions, shading, lighting, background, perspective, colors and mood, details. There is time to practice that makes everything perfect. ^^

Not all lizardmen actually, there are ranges from slim, to athletic, to strong, and to buff on the army and civilians. In military, a soldier should stay strong and muscular without body armor on hehehe X3
For the footwear, yes. He can walk and hang on trees without causing pain on his feet. Thanks

I wouldn´t though to see again Hotara after a long time. sure there´s few differences in his look due to your actual drawing style, which got some improvement ; )
The funny thing here is watching a buffy warrior look as an archer, I would use well those muscles for some melee weapons XD But well, that´s up to your daste afterall.
Thanks for dedicating this pic with Reptile and me ^ ^ Good to see you got time and desire to draw Hotara and with some new equipment at least.

Hotara isn't always an archer. He can do melee weapons (Saberbow WITHOUT bowstring, e.g.) like Skaro does. :P
Yes, my first anthro character makes his return with new look for few years. I miss him and his stories a lot, so I need to push my effort to do original art ^^
You're welcome, Aldo. Those were good old times when I had lots of conflicts ^^
P.S.: I finally got 24" monitor using commission money, allowing me to use 1080p and retiring from old 720p resolution with mere 18.5" one. And it got upgrades on my workstation! :D

Hmm I see. The idea of using the bow as a melee weapon sometimes might work, but it´s complicated if it´s not go off from logic.
Technically what Reptile said. A bow made of metal... I´m not an expert with archery but bit doesn´t sound like it could use it properly to shot an arrow. If it´s metal the whole bow doesn´t sounds like it´s gonna bend to give an impulse to the arrow along with the string to shoot it in far distance. Like what Reptile told you, it would have be best to have a wood bow which it could bend to give the boost in the shoot. (and it´s gotta be wood since Hotara is into medieval stuff ^ ^°)
To make things more clear, you can take a look this scene of Legolas https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nM7byUTrSZA You can see how the bow bends to make a good shot to the arrow along with the string, and when he need to do a close combat, he takes out a separate blade. Sure, sometimes you can use your own bow as a melee weapon to hit and stun someone so then you can shoot later.
So yeah, don´t take Reptile´s comment too harsh. I bet he would told me the same thing if I ever do a desicion like this ^^°
And wow, awesome that you manage to get a new screen for your works thanks to the commissions you get, not bad.

Nah I don't find his comment harsh. I understand you both when it comes to logic how the bow should be ^^
I'm just afraid if Hotara replaces it to the wooden bow to make it better in every situation, then it will affect my story throughout chapters badly that he crafted it by himself and that he used it effectively ^^°. So I think of something creatively alternative without overhauling the design, Legolas is my idol in all Tolkien movies so yeah, I've been looking on his attacks every time hehe.
Yep, photoshop is a wider than before. ^^
