Now that sabertooths are somewhat trending, I just wanted to help you avoid the most common mistakes I see.
To do that, I abused the hell out of Wikimedia Commons and, not proud of that, even of Mr. Antóns beautiful Smilodon head reconstruction for proportions. Go buy his books, they're the best thing there is on sabertooths! :)
And of course, species differences apply, but the general trend is true for most of them.

Banana Heads are best <3
I'm now going to call all Sabertooths at cons 'Banana Heads' (To which a lot are just sabers on tigers tbh)
I've downloaded a bunch of references and old drawings, skulls and the lot of things to try and work on my anatomy/sabers/different cats.

Überflüssige Sidenote, aber ich musste mir grad eben doch mal Bilder von Diego angucken - und lag tatsächlich richtig mit meiner Erinnerung. Abgesehen davon, dass er eh ne sehr übertrieben cartoonige Kopfform hat, sind die Zähnchen schon arg grenzwertig. Mein erster Gedanke war "der trägt die doch eigentlich auch total im Mundwinkel..".
Aber Diegos Mundwinkel sind auch ziemlich weit vorne an seinem Kopf, das muß man ihm lassen. ^^ Bei ihm frag ich mich viel mehr, ob sein Designer sich an diesen ganz alten 60er Jahre Rekonstruktionen orientiert hat. Damals gabs die Theorie, die Nase eines Smilo könnte gar nicht an der Spitze seiner Schnauze sein, sonst könnte er beim Zubeißen nicht einatmen, sondern sie müßte hinter den Zähnen liegen. Diego hat genau so eine Nase.
