I think acrylic is a good choice. Also you can use paint for models (planes, tanks, figures, ect.)
It's usually acryl-like paint with many color choices and you can use special things like " смывка, пегмент" don't know how it's called in English and if you mess up you can wash it off with "растворитель"- again my miserable English)

My professional-model making friend suggested you to wash it off first (and as oniontrain said), prime it and use acrylic paint:)
