Ask Vincent Answers 7
Hey everybody, thanks again for all the Vincent questions! Sorry it took me so long to get to some of them. :)
Vincent does actually enjoy reading from time to time, but it isn't very often. Ethan is more of the bookworm, so he doesn't really understand Vincent's lack of enthusiasm when it comes to reading, haha.
Vincent often finds himself getting addicted to video games for long periods of time, then laments the fact that he hasn't gotten much painting done and his homework is incomplete.
Maddie and Vincent met when they were pretty little. *I wrote a story about this which I will post below. I haven't yet written a friendship origin story for Ethan, but I think they met around age 12 or 13.
This was the least scary thing I could think about Vincent finding in the sea, haha.
Episode 2
You and I are Gonna Be Friends
When Vincent was six, he didn't want to go to his second day of First Grade. Technically it was his second second day of First Grade... His family had moved halfway through the school year so he was coming into this school as a stranger; an outsider. It didn't help that he was small for his age and chubby, and also quite shy. Yesterday he'd already endured a disastrous first day of being picked on by a gang of Second Grade bullies and he wasn't looking forward to going back there again. He hadn't told his mother about this... but it was clear that he didn't want to go to school for some reason.
His mother knelt down on the floor in front of him and zipped up his jacket. “It's okay, Vin... I know it's hard being the new kid at school, but it'll get better.” She put one hand on the young skunk's shoulder and held up his lunch box with the other. “I made you an extra special lunch today, it'll make you feel better.”
Vincent reluctantly took the lunch box in his hand. The picture of Pepe Le Pew on the front stared up at him. His mother took his other hand and lead him out to the end of the driveway where they waited for the bus together.
The first half of the day went without incident, he learned a little about reading and writing, a little about numbers. He'd collected a few handouts he'd have to go over with his mom and dad when he got back home that afternoon, but it wasn't the classes that worried him so much... the bullies had confronted him and stolen his lunch the day before, so it was lunchtime he was dreading.
When the lunch bell rang, the kids all ran by him toward the playground where they were able to eat outside and swing and play before coming back in for the rest of classes. The little skunk trailed behind everyone else. He looked out over the playground clutching his lunchbox to his chest. He pulled his sizable fluffy tail under one arm thinking hiding it would make him less noticeable. He didn't see sign of the second graders this time around. He found an out of the way cement bench and sat down to have his lunch alone. He laid his jacket down on the bench where it draped over the front almost touching the ground and placed his lunch box on top of it. Just as he opened the box he heard a familiar voice.
“What do we have here? If it isn't that fat skunk from yesterday!” Tommy Catterwalk snatched Vincent's lunchbox out of his hands. “What's for lunch today?”
“Hey!” Vincent protested but the other two boys shoved him to the ground.
Suddenly there came a booming voice so loud and demanding that Vincent rolled under the bench instinctively. He was able to hide behind his dangling jacket out of sight. He could see the boys' feet and he heard the voice scream “TOMMY! I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU TO STAY AWAY FROM MY BENCH!!”
“Crap!” Tommy exclaimed.
From beneath the bench, Vincent saw his lunchbox fall to the ground unopened and feet scrambling away.
“You better run!” The voice said. “Unless you want me to sock you again!” A set of sneakers calmly approached the bench, but Vincent couldn't see who they belonged to without revealing himself. He trembled at the thought of another bully who was so scary, Tommy and his friends had run from the sound of them.
Two hands reached down and picked up Vincent's lunchbox. “At least they left me lunch.” She muttered. The mystery girl sat down on the bench, her feet dangling just above the ground. Vincent could hear her unpacking his lunch and spreading it across the bench. “This... can't be Tommy's lunch...” She said softly. Just then Vincent started sobbing. He tried to stay quiet but he couldn't hold it in.
Maddie the squirrel leaned forward and lifted the jacket hanging over the bench and gazed down at the chubby skunk hiding underneath. Vincent backed up further under the bench. Maddie looked at the cover image on the lunch box “Pepe Le Pew? This is your lunch, isn't it?”
Her voice was kind now and not terrifying like it had been a few moments ago. Vincent's teary yellow eyes looked up at her. She was now holding up a bag of heart shaped sugar cookies. “Do you just have, like, the best mom ever? Are you new here?”
Vincent wasn't sure which question to answer first, but since the answers were the same, he just nodded.
Maddie turned and gazed off “I hate bullies.” She said before extending her hand to Vincent. “I'm Madeline... Maddie.” With a firm grip, she pulled Vincent out from under the bench and helped him dust off his clothes. When he was sufficiently clean, they sat down on the bench with Vincent's lunch between them. Maddie added her own lunch box to the mix. She pulled out a plastic container and peeled off the lid. “My dad gave me some leftover lasagna. It's good, d'ya want some?”
Vincent finally spoke “That's my favorite!”
