your English is fine. Once upon a time, when people actually bought and kept books, it was always a problem if there were not enough books to keep everything tight on the shelf - so - small statues with a flat on one side would be placed to keep the books upright. The statues would be the same only reversed - or similar but different (as with your Chinese pair).
