Mrish rarely appear in my work, but they are still stuck in my head for some reason.

The upper two beds were intended as starship furnishings, where space is usually at a premium. The lower two are common items one might find in any mrish home. Human-style beds aren't unknown (they are usually round) but ancestral mrish denned in hollow trees and are perfectly comfortable sleeping in claustrophically tight spaces or in groups. One slang term for a group of mrish is "An orgy of mrish" so clearly they don't mind company. 83
Falan (Strega's species) denned in ice caves and rock huts before the Uplift and they, too, are used to tight places. Some will den in spaces so confined that fur and the occasional limb sticks out and they will sleep in groups like mrish as well. The difference is that mrish are human sized while falan average 600-700 pounds each.
Inevitably, this came to mind:

Hm. Maybe we've identified one of the infiltrators.

I love ideas like these; they're quite inspiring. I think I need to do more research on these mrish of yours. :)
Like many furs, I've been developing my own SF story involving predominantly quadrupedal aliens, and they're also a highly communal species that enjoys the comfort of close proximity and shared bodily warmth. I think they'd find beds like these quite inviting, especially on their ship, where the top two designs would be very efficient, as you point out. I'd also had the idea for a concave, papa-san style bed like yours, but large enough for several individuals, like a small family, and hinged like a Murphy bed so it could swing up against the wall when not in use.
But the idea of "coffee table as guest bed"? That's brilliant. In fact, I could see something like that being a minor plot device in my story, as an offshoot of the paranoia they encounter when visiting Earth. "Did you know those aliens can become small enough to hide in our furniture?" :)

Mrish sleeping habits are partially based off of the ferrets have owned. Ferrets love confined spaces and will sleep in a Kleenex box if there's one available. One would also sleep in the hassock bed if it were the right size. They are bendy things, ferrets, and will sleep in groups all draped over one another or curled in a ball equally happily.
