Interesting build and backstory. Hey, they had to start somewhere, between Zefram Cochrane's Phoenix and that first Enterprise.
Chromakey materials are available at Adorama, starting at under $30 U$D. I don't know much about using it (I do mostly nature, vehicle and architectural photography), but I guess you need to use software to make it... fly.
