The pink area just ahead of his eye is called the preorbital gland, it is a sent gland. On some species of deer it is more pronounced than on others.

I'm not familiar with that particular song... but I can certainly hear him singing it... he's about my favorite singer. I wanted to get the CD of him with the lute player... medieval stuff...
