That was one of my first Funhouse sequences. I honestly have no idea where these things come from. Somehow a time loop seemed appropriate: The sight of his future self helped set him on the way towards becoming that bear...

Indeed! The first time I remember seeing the motif was in Man-Bat's (a Batman villain) origin story, beautifully drawn by Neal Adams - the moment where Dr. Langstrom discovers he's taken on the physical appearance of those creepy flying creatures.
