My eyes, they burned.
I laid on the floor of the empty building I found, unable to move. I was still in this world, but why? The sharp pain from before still rushes down my back, with each pulse it feels like heat surging through my body. I tried to get up, but I just simply couldn't.
That's when the feeling started. As I stared at the ceiling, wondering what was even going on at this point, but everything started to fade to white. The dark room grew brighter. It felt as if every time I would blink, a layer of the darkness faded away...
That's when I came back.
My eyes were never open, in fact, they weren't open for a long time. They stung as air hit them directly, but as things came into focus, I realised I was in a bed of some sort. I couldn't move, no matter how hard I tried. My body was completely unresponsive. Suddenly it was dawning on me, the car crash...it was coming back to me. That time in the darkness, was I...?
No, there's no way that could have been a coma. Everything felt too real. But where ever I was, this was serious. It was dark, I could hear pumping noises. My lungs were being helped with air getting into them. I didn't want to think about it, but it was all coming together. I had to be paralyzed. I shut my eyes, not wanting to accept what I've discovered. Darkness once again came, but it was nothing of the sort that haunted me for so long.
Morning came, my eyes opened to see two people in the room. I didn't recognise who they were, but they had to be medical staff. I tried to speak, but I couldn't. I felt something in my throat now, it was a breathing tube. I managed a muffled grunt, the girl in the room turns around, shocked to see my eyes open. She runs out of the room, calling out a name.
"Doctor Larkin! The patient is actually conscious!"
"Wait, what? He's been in a coma for years, are you sure?"
After hearing them talk, they both return. As I looked at the doctor, he looked at me with amazement. "He is awake, we thought he was gone for sure. Well, looks like he'll be useful for the project after all. I'm glad we didn't take the time to attach that cerebral core plug for nothing,"
Wait, cerebral core plug? I had no idea what that was, but for some reason it made me think of the gloomy figure from my dreams and then the sharp pain. Was that my subconsciousness recreating what they did to me? But before I could ponder on it, the doctor walked up to me.
"I need to see if you're aware of me, if you understand me, blink twice fast please,"
I blinked as fast as I could, and he smiled. "So you understand me then?" he asked again, I blinked twice once more. I felt so helpless with this being my only way to even verify that I was still alive inside. "Well, I have some good news, you have been picked for a project that could change humanity. Your misfortune will not be in vain,"
What? I was so confused, I had no idea what he was talking about. But that's when four more people came into the room and started gathering things. One of the people puts a mask over my face and everything just faded away...
The edge of darkness, once again I see it. It felt like being on an observation deck to the abyss I once traversed, but it was short lived, because before I knew it, my eyes opened once more. The sounds of the machines keeping me alive once again met my ears. But the room was different, in front of me there was a tank...inside I could not believe my eyes. It was human in appearance almost, but had fur. Its fur was white in color, the tips of his ears were black. A device was attached to his muzzle, my guess was for breathing as he was suspended in some sort of fluid...this creature's presence was almost majestic in nature, what was it? The head shape made me think of a fox almost.
"You're awake again, I see,"
The doctor's familiar voice rang through the room. He approached my bed, still smiling about something. "You see, that is a magnificent creation. It's a humanoid animal, created to take the mind of a human, but the physical strength and endurance of an animal. You will be the first human to do two things you see. That will to have your mind downloaded into a database and then transferred into that body you see suspended in front of you. Our tests proved correct, you survived a coma for eight years, you woke up on your own. That's why we know you are perfect for this project,"
My eyes widened. Downloaded? Transferred? I was so lost, but would this mean I would walk again? I didn't know what to even think of this. The idea of having my mind, downloaded...it was something I only watched and read in Science Fiction. I turned my eyes back to the creature in the tank. While not human, I wasn't scared of what it was. They wanted to transfer my mind into that body. I don't even know how they're going to do such a thing, all I know is that I'm just along for the ride at this point.
"I know you were in a coma, but we installed a prototype cerebral core plug that is now fused with your brain, in simple terms that is," the doctor explains more. "We are going to start this process tomorrow, we cannot waste time on this. That body you see there is only six months old. It cannot be suspended for much longer, it's the ultimate organic vessel for the human mind to control. I can only hope this goes well for you," he says as he walks towards the exit of the room.
My eyes are still fixated on the tank, while things start to make sense while in the darkness. That sharp pain I felt was these people attaching that core thing to my brain itself. It was starting to freak me out, but download my mind? It just made no sense to me. I had no choice but to put my trust into this. They obviously have been planning this, but for eight years?
My mind simply could not stop racing. Eight years, how much has the world I once knew changed? My girlfriend? My father? Answers I needed that would not be given until this process was finished, or at least I kept telling myself. But...wait, this new body? Would people be scared of me? What would happen to me after the transfer? The anxiety swarmed me, but it was happening no matter what I would have really wanted. I closed my eyes, I needed to sleep and wait for tomorrow.
To tell you the truth, I'll take my chances with an animal humanoid body. Being a vegetable sucks.
Our protagonist's ride continues, as he makes discoveries on what that darkness was and what future awaits him.
