The UFFL Season has officially begun! This past Sunday, we held our first week of the Preseason. The games don't count (per sé) but I could feel the anxiousness and excitement all day on Sunday :)
Our feature game this week was Texas @ Montreal, which was recorded and can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuC_95rBB5E
Full game results can be found here: http://www.angelfire.com/wi3/gplehn.....ults.html#Pre1
DOWNRIVER 27, CALIFORNIA 14
What a way to return ready and angry! After last year's dismal season, the Downriver Waves used this preseason game to start backup QB Vern McCauley (raven), who threw for two touchdowns, including one to recently drafted wide receiver Jesse Oahu, whose hands stick to footballs like glue! They pulled off the upset in Los Angeles against a stuttering Dons defense.
EASTON 3, LAS VEGAS 24
It's hard to beat Las Vegas at home - even during the preseason. Andre Williams (LVG) and Kai Koa (EAS) got the starts, but Koa may need to spend a bit more time with the playbook, or - at least - settling some things out with the teammates. The Bald Eagles couldn't contain the depth of the Bandits' offense, and veteran Terry Paige (RB - german pinscher) came in to run through gaps after Alex Smith went out with a neck injury. Easton's Mike Moretti (WR - Badger) was impressive with over 100 yards receiving on eight catches.
BALTIMORE 7, CHICAGO 10
Arguably one of the less show-stopping games of this week, the game remained 0-0 at the half, and was tied 7-7 until a last-minute 56-yard field goal from Thalia Perez prevented overtime sessions. Backup RB Ellsworth Starr (CHI - tree swallow) showed some promise with 89 yards on 25 carries. Seals, who filled in nicely for the injured Darius Smith last season, managed enough with the second-string crew to pull out the win at home.
NEW YORK 28, FARGO 10
There are some concerns regarding the readiness of the Fargo Axemen this season, and it showed up in a big way on defense. Charles Snyder, who was relegated to backup-FB in Easton last season, caught 3 passes for 71 yards, from - guess who? - Joe Bowers. Yup, the feline of our hearts faded out a bit but has been given the opportunity to start in New York. Adrie Dawkins was scheduled to start, but went out early with a finger injury. It may be Bowers again leading the pack in next week's match-up.
GRAND RAPIDS 6, NORTH FLORIDA 33
Another team looking to jump-start their players is North Florida, and in the small stadium of 12,000, the Renegades readily handed the Dragons a defeat. Rookie Travis Lockhart (QB - Panther) got the start for Grand Rapids, but faced difficulty with the receiving corps. Could the 2014 Renegades defense be back? Kennith Shrader (DE - german shepherd) had one sack and two forced fumbles - one of which was recovered and returned for a touchdown. Upset about not getting that sack record last year, perhaps?
TEXAS 7, MONTREAL 21
The Montreal Royal (previously Abilene Lancers) hosted Texas in the first-ever game in Canada, and it was a close one, despite the score. Tied at 7-7, Manukora Piselli caught a short pass in the endzone to take a 14-7 lead, which was defended well by the Royal defense, but challenged multiple times by Texas and their rookie phenoms. Proving to be a force was Vito Ligustica - who ran for 120 of the 160 rushing yards that Montreal piled onto Texas' defensive line. A late pick-6 by Kim Howell sealed the deal. Bienvenue à l'UFFL, Montréal!
KEY INJURIES (Statuses for Preseason Week 2):
Chance of playing next week: Doubtful = 25%; Questionable = 50%; Probable = 75%.
