I could only gaze in sadness at the pair of brilliant lights that gently drifted in the palm of the lich's hand. At the time it had seemed to be such a simple game that I had been playing, but I had unwittingly played straight into his hand.

yesss BUUUTTT havent you heard of the AUs? if yo think... it exists....... in my personal HeadConon the Barrier yes did lock the monsters underground BUT it acts as a Portal to other worlds! so when the correct soul is passed into the barrier it unlocks a Universe to travel to.... InkSans soul leads to a Hallway of doors while Sans soul leads to the begining of the timeline but Sans could remember the Timeline before hand.... but the Human Soul disables the barrier.... so my AU is that the Barrier is an Interdimensional Gateway, sorta like a StarGate
In my AU, Humanity wipes itself out during a nuclear war and the non-existence of mankind triggers the barrier to deteriorate over time, until eventually small groups of monster start to bring life back to the torched surface...then turn on each other now that they are no longer untied against a common enemy.
