Scanner washed out the colors, of course. This is my character Sam, who is a species I'va christened Corax, based off of the archeopteryx. No flight feathers on his wings, obviously, since archeopteryx couldn't fly. The feathers are actually protofeathers, not true feathers just yet. Also, I think I placed his tail too low on his spine, and I know his sitting pose is off because of it. I could only spend so much time on this before I started getting... er, tingly-feelings. Long story...
Sam has always been a strange, er, and complex character to me. In one way, he is his own character entirely. He is his own person and exists on his own storyline.
In another way, much of his being and actions are based off of an actual source, one whose reaction to being used to create a character I still don't know. Next year will mark 10 years, and I honestly thought I'd have forgotten about it all by now. Somehow, some things just don't go away like you'd expect them to. I wish there were a way of being able to discover the truth about the intangible.
It got to a strange point while drawing this; no matter how hard I tried his facial expression kept changing as I was drawing the lines. It was quite a large smirk when I sketched, started fading when I traced the lines onto the cardstock, and totally changed once again when I inked. I couldn't keep his face looking the way I wanted it to be.
One of these days I'll do a meditation practice, just let go and think long and hard, and then see what I can create focused on Sam.
