Even if a piece of art contains somebody else's character, you, as the person who created the art for the person who owns said character, are still entitled to the artwork's commercial rights. This is exactly why a lot of artists have a clause in their commission Terms of Service stating that they reserve such rights. For example: "I, as the artist, retain all commercial rights to the artwork; this includes, but is not limited to: selling the artwork as printed on commodity items such as mugs, fridge magnets, notition booklets, smartphone cases; or as wearable items, such as t-shirts and caps." It's totally reasonable for an artist to do this. (Feel free to include it in your own ToS if you like as it's imperative to an artist expanding their market).
