See, I disagree. Now that you punched up the saturation and threw down some grain/texture I think the colors work great.
And his face is a total bitch, I think because it's so simple. I seriously spent like an hour just drawing and redrawing in his eyes on mine >_<
Also, HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME OH GOD THINK OF THE CHILDREN.

Yeah I spent like an hour on the face too and was like "hmm this looks good" and then I scanned it and was like "no... I have to change this"
And then after I'm done painting I'm still looking at his eyes and going "Man there's something really off about this"
I still think they're too wide apart, yet no matter how I slide them around it's off. Oh Watterson, you've really created a monster.

Yeah, though Watterson would never say it. It's kind of like the rumored original ending of the Doraemon series, where Nobita turned out to be a child with a terminal illness and Doraemon was just an imaginary friend all along, and all the adventures they went on were just in his head.
This is so lovely.
*sigh*
Okay, I just need to know this, is this comicstrip done, or is it still going on? Because when I mentioned to someone how much I miss it, he went on saying that it's still being printed. I know wiki says the final strip was shown on "Sunday, December 31, 1995.", and I've seen that one, and I remember feeling sad when reading it. But I just need someone else to tell me, is it done? Is this other guy an idiot and only referring to reprinted comics?

it's kind of hard to sue people and make cash out of it when it comes to art theft; especially if it's not that big of a company and they're not using it for something like a logo. Or when it's in another state and you have to pay the travel expenses to go there or deal with different laws regarding art theft etc. Sometimes it's just not worth doing because you barely break even after paying the lawyer and housing/transportation etc. I dunno about his case, though :3
he railed against bootleggers pretty hard in the intro to one of the C&H anthologies. but he also said he wouldn't license any authorized C&H gear beacse it would cheapen the strips. he ALSO said comic books are stupid and utterly useless and that strips are the only proper manifestation of graphic/text synergy... an outspoken man of strong opinions, to be sure.
i love the simpsons where bart starts making t-shirts and Moe is browsing his table:
"do you got any of calvin pissing on hobbes?"
"no"
"well what do you have him pissing on?"

I would say it's more like he's a hermit or a curmudgeon than bitter. He has strong opinions and probably less tolerance for the annoying shenanigans that people get up to on a regular basis. Plus, he's passionate about his art form.
Point to remember: This is the man who wrote Calvin and Hobbes. He wrote a long-running comic strip that highlighted the wacky antics of a child that was keenly aware of how little sense the world made at times, how nonsensical people could be, and kept himself together by living as much in his fantasies as he did in objective reality. There were plenty of times that the joy and whimsy blended with pointed social commentary.

I dunno; I agree with Kamui in that Hobbes is the perfect/ideal boyfriend for sure. But that's more of a personality/character thing than his appearance :o
I have a really hard time picturing him in any erotic situations that I would find stimulating, which is something that I can't say the same for other cartoon characters :3 like... say... robin hood or foghorn leghorn. But to each is own!
I'll leave Kamui to draw the Hobbes porn!

But anyhoo, this is still awesomely amazingly awesome. I was just thinking about Bill Watterson the other day and how he's the most hardcore non-sellout artist out there, and he was working at the same time as the worst, greediest sellout ever, Jim Davis. They're such great opposites.
that's because Garfield is laaaaame, and its only good for making these http://garfieldminusgarfield.net/
I would posit that Hobbes animation worked on the fundamental similar to that of Toy Story. We never see him in any form of animated state while other people are around; however we have no evidence that he is simply a toy when only Calvin is present, that I can recall (granted, its been years...).
i can never read the last book that he made containing his last comics...always a sense of sadness when i try to
and i will honestly say hobbs is in calvin's imagination but i think he never goes away, to me i think he goes on to be with another kid that needs a friend
your picture is just incredible, the slight grainyness of all the colors on the background objects and water mark splotches for shadows is spot on to the true style, and you did a great job of drawing hobbs ,cause yes his face is so simple its difficult
and i will honestly say that this picture made me cry cause of the pure innocence this whole picture shows, im sure watterson would be proud of this ^-^

yeah... i always get sad after the laughs when i read calvin & hobbes. I'm not sure why that is? Perhaps it reminds us of our childhood, while introducing an imaginary partner that we'd all have loved to have. It's completely innocent, witty, yet truthful throughout
but it's soooo good.
but it's soooo good.
Agreed, and my god I am SO glad others did read this comic.
It did make me laugh a bunch, I figure if you didn't have an imaginary friend when you where a kid, you missed out lol
But I think the sadest hits, when you have to say goodbye, and unfortunately it makes so people really, really depressed. Cause once you give it up, you realize your now alone.
** Well, it happened to me, but I learned how to deal with being alone.

I agree on the face, but other than that, it's a wonderful emulation of the creator's style. Calvin and Hobbes was a huge part of my childhood and it still pains me that he gave up the comic after 10 years. This picture reminds me of everything great about the comic strip: Awesome backgrounds, undiscovered land (Calvin's woods was like, half a state wide lol) and of course, Hobbes <3
Hot diggity!
If Waterson saw this he would either tickle your eyebrows with his moustache of joy or kidnap you and force you to make new Calvin & Hobbes comics.
This brings back fond memories of joy and a childhood where the world "danger" meant the same as fun. You didn't think things much through, time for worries came during the moments. And the feeling you got when you realised you survived was so good that you didn't again.

This is perfect... I mean absolutely perfect O_O
The background style (coloring and lineart) is nearly identical to the comic style, and I swear that you've drawn the best Hobbes ever!
And yeah... I know what you mean about the face... getting his eyes to look right and still maintain that simple style is very difficult. Especially if you try to draw him looking at different angles...
But you managed to pull it off, flawlessly... This picture get's me a little teary-eyed actually.

This reminds me of the one where Calvin wakes up one morning, gets ready for school, walks out the door, trips over a rock at the edge of a cliff and plummets towards the earth. He then wakes up; gets ready for school, walks out the door, and falls off the edge of the front steps, plummeting to the ground miles below him. He wakes up yet again to here his mother calling him, afraid to get out of bed. A dream inside of a dream, I’ve actually experienced one and they are quite strange. I love this pic, you have captured Wattersons style with stunning accuracy.
"Hobbe's face still doesn't feel right and the colors feel kind of flat,"
Having grown up on the Calvin and Hobbes books, I call BS on both points and commend you for capturing the warm feel of Watterson's work and the utter insanity of the heights those two are willing to ascend to for a bloody wagon ride! XD

This is an amazing duplication of Watterson's style. Dead on. I was shocked to find that it wasn't some sort of copy after seeing the preview. I really can't say enough how much I love this piece.
It makes me long for the days when you might've still seen this in a publication.

Calvin and Hobbes. My childhood heroes. I had both of 'em as "imaginary" friends. And I still am not entirely convinced that Hobbes is only an inanimate stuffed tiger, despite all the evidence to the contrary.
If this isn't the best homage to Watterson's creation ever created, then I don't know what is.
(Man, this reminds me of this path I saw at the top of the Scarborough Bluffs, which went up to the edge of the cliff then right off into the air 100 feet above the pounding Lake Ontario surf)

Completely, utterly, absolutely wonderful. If I could I would leave this as my top favorite of all time since there's seriously nothing else on FA more happy to me than this. Your fidelity to Watterson's style is astounding and better still is the faithfulness to the character and the spirit of the comic. Love this. Love it!!
I miss Bill Watterson, i was lucky enough to get all comics out at the time just before his death autographed by him. I was the only guy in line and i went and bought them all, when i realized it was him there. I already owned them, but i need his autograph pronto! Money well spent!
