Actually I just made the year up, but the year should be closer to 1997 or so, as a recollection of my myopic view of the fandom.

Well I'm assuming hugs have been big since the early years, and Furry's been... well, Furry, since the late 80s (if my Wikifur reading is any good), so I think your year is pretty close to the ball.
