Anatoly enlisted to save his younger brother Kolyat and his sick father from being drafted into the military.

Due to Anatoly's massive size, standing at 7 feet tall: he was specially selected to be one of 3 soldiers to test experimental power armor. Tanks were becoming obsolete in this war: why build a tank when you can put a massive, reinforced, semi truck worth of sentient combat armor on your best soldier, arm them with a mini gun that fires plasma rounds that can burn through tank armor with little effort, and send them to destroy a bunker full of hostiles?

The armor is incredibly durable, Charles took an RPG to the face: and though it weakened the helmet to allow a simple sniper rifle to pierce through: his head came out unscathed from the explosion. The difference in responsibility with the power armor is what really separates Charles from Anatoly. Charles enjoyed mutilating enemy soldiers with his, often ripping them limb from limb with the enhanced strength or crushing their heads like grapes: his armor was ironically white and angelic looking.

Anatoly on the other hand used his power armor to help lift heavy rubble off trapped civilians and pull broken vehicles out of danger zones. The power armor is not without flaws however, concentrated fire on the back of the suit can cause the power supply to combust and cook the pilot alive, the suit is also run by a miniature nuclear reactor: which risks exposing it's pilots to cancer.
