Over the years, I had presented various renderings of
Oz Kangaroo in fattened form - usually filled up with air, gas, water, and/or food - especially around the time of his birthday (August 28th), when I bestow a special greeting to him... from my part of the USA to his part of Australia!
The source for this year's birthday greeting was a very unlikely one: the "Wall Street Journal". In a June, 2016 issue, I came across an article about the supply and demand for Australian silver coins - turned out by the Perth Mint - including one depicting a kangaroo emblazoned on it (which began selling in September, 2015). Investors and coin collectors (also known as 'numismatists') from all over the world wanted to obtain some of that 'marsupial money'.
Said article had an illustration of the head side of the silver coin, not only displaying the kangaroo, but the words 'Australian Kangaroo' at the top, and '2016 - 1 oz. 9999 Silver' on the bottom. But it was the way the animal in the middle was posed (hopping from right to left) that gave me the inspiration for this year's birthday greeting gag...
I can easily picture 'Oz Kangaroo' (in his most lean form) heading to an artist's loft, so he could model for the silver coin, in order for him to become immortalized by the folks at the Perth Mint. Now, how he ended up getting inflated this time... I'm going to leave that to your imagination! All I know is, the artist painted what he saw, and submitted the completed artwork to the mint. Needless to say, the round version of 'Oz' didn't get to appear on the silver coin, but (as a joke) the mint decided to print his image on a more appropriate metal coin: a 'lead nickel' (which ain't even worth 'a dime a dozen')!
And now that his RL artist/creator is here in the USA, all I can say to 'Oz' (and Eden) is "May you value all of your friends - Aussie and American alike - and may your natal anniversary this year be worth more than all the gold and silver on the planet!" (And yes, I know... I'm a week behind schedule. So, let me shout out the obligatory "better late than never" expostulation!) =OQ|

Thank you, Captain! I was originally going to design the whole coin in the same style as the original Australian silver one - with an op art design behind the kangaroo - but I didn't want the final outcome to look overly complex. I might post (later this month) this alternate version of the coin with the op art design, so that others could judge the quality of it. Be on the lookout for it...
