Sometimes an artist will become very happy when they get random fanart instead of being asked if its fine, I know I do. Most tend to like random fanart without warning, but just make sure you keep the character reference so you don't forget anything crucial.

But it's also good to ask, the worst case is that the artist will say no, and even that is pretty rare, everyone loves fanart!
