A short story I wrote during my Short Story Saturday stream I did alongside
RockyTheProcy's Free Sketch Friday stream (9/3/16). This story was won by
arw94, and it stars the fairly short Dragonite Mac, who is pretty fed up with constantly getting rejected from teams due to his short stature. But hearing word of the legendary gluttons of Team Azure (Blue and Roy), he decides that an overweight team is better than no team. Of course, our two favourite gluttons won't exactly just let Mac in, where would the fun in that be?

Pokémon Mystery Recruit
“What do you MEAN I’m too short?”
“Literally what it says on the tin. Our team focuses on speed, and your stubby legs wouldn’t let you keep up with us.”
“I have FREAKING WINGS!”
“Can you fly fast in tight, cramped dungeons?”
“Well….”
“Then you’re too slow for us, but thanks for applying anyways.”
SLAM! Nine team’s worth of rejection, this was beyond the joke. It’s not like he ASKED to be born small. Sighing despondently, Mac the Dragonite hobbled away from Team Dust’s base. Half the typical height of his kind, he was something of a joke when it came to his species. Sure, he could hit as hard as any other Dragonite, but it was often hard to take a meter tall dragon seriously even on the best of days. Stopping by a bench for a rest, Mac’s feet swung in the air, his legs too short to even touch the ground. “What am I going to do?” Mac sighed as he rested his head in his hands.
The only reason he had even tried so hard to evolve into Dragonite was so that he could be considered strong enough that people would look past his height. But it would seem that even if you are a Dragonite, there is apparently some kind of unspoken rule about every team having a minimum height restrictions. But for Arceus’ sake, he had been rejected by a team made of a Caterpie, Weedle, and a Wurmple. That’s just low, no pun intended. “So have you heard about Team Azure’s recent adventure?”
Cocking his head to the right, Mac watched silently as a pair of Mons gossiped away. “Yeah, they came back even larger than usual. Apparently it was a dungeon with gingerbread enemies” a Raticate gossiped.
“They brought one back too. Apparently it was struggling to get away” the Ninetales talking with it replied.
“If it was trying to get away from Blue, I wouldn’t blame it” the rat nodded.
“Coming back larger than usual? Hmm, Team Azure….” Rubbing his chin, the Dragonite thought things over for about, let’s see. *Checks a watch* Wow, literally half a second. Sliding off the bench, the dragon’s foot wiggled about until his toe finally brushed the grass. “Uhh, do you need some help there kid?” the Ninetales asked.
“I’m twenty!” Mac snarled as he slipped off the bench, leaving the two chatting Mons very confused.
“What the heck kind of operation do these two run?!”
With some directions, the Dragonite had finally managed to locate Team Azure’s base, which was a storage warehouse actually attached to a dungeon. How on earth do you even get property like that? It baffled the dragon as to why a two-Mon team would even need something this big. Then again, they were notorious gluttons, so it wouldn’t be far from the truth that they’d need a site this big for food (and themselves). bam bam bam. His knocks barely made a sound on the heavy door, but the sound of movement and what appeared to be shouting showed that the occupants of the building had at least heard Mac. Preening himself hastily, the Dragonite tried to be as presentable as possible until the door opened. “Hello?”
It was a wall in front of him. A wall of very stretched, and completely round cream-coloured scaly belly. Craning his neck almost vertically, the gobsmacked little dragon could barely even see the face of this titan that stood before him. “Hello? Anyone there?” the voice from on high called again.
“Down here” Mac called.
The wall of flesh shuffled about, the stubby blue legs it stood on bending (however impossible it may seem) to allow it to shift down. Staring down at the little Dragonite was the bloated face of a very well-nourished Blastoise, his cheeks bulbous and his twin, very fat chins jiggly. “Oh, hello there” he said in a friendly manner.
“Are you Blue, of Team Azure?” Mac questioned seriously.
“Got it in one” the giant tortoise grinned. “Do you have a request for us or something?”
“Something like that. I wanna join you guys” the Dragonite announced.
The big blue mountain’s smile didn’t change, although his brow did raise slightly. “You do huh? Well come on in then. Roy and I don’t really recruit, but I think we might make an exception here” he chuckled. Shifting about, the Blastoise showed the diminutive dragon in, the door slamming shut behind him.
Now inside Team Azure’s base, Mac was understandably surprised at the kind of operation they were running here. Much of the enormous base was taken up by various storage units, with several industrial-sized fridges as well. “What on earth?” the dragon gaped.
“Yeah, we have a bit of a reputation for hoarding food” Blue grinned proudly. “But don’t get us wrong, we always share our finds with anyone who asks” he added with a slight guilty tone.
Mac just stared at the Blastoise. Up close it was hard to appreciate the size, but now that he was a few steps away, it truly sank in just how round Blue was. Like, he was so unbelievably tall and bloated. Push him down a hill and he’d devastate a town like a giant boulder. His shell, that is, what little of it that could be seen was barely able to cover the hill of adipose that was his back. And jeez, his legs were pretty amazing, but then, they’d need to be to carry all of that around. “Right” the Dragonite uttered quietly. Pausing by one of the fridges, Mac looked in to find countless jars and containers filling it, including a pile of golden apples safely contained in some Tupperware. “You’ve found golden apples?” he gasped.
“Oh yeah, that was a fun adventure. These apples might not look like much, but they’re actually pretty potent after you eat a couple” Blue explained with a smirk.
“What do you mean?” Mac inquired.
“You’ll see~” the tortoise sang as he hobbled over to a door. Pounding loudly on it, some shuffling was heard beyond it. “Sweetie~! We have a visitor!” he called.
“Sweetie?” Mac thought as the enormous tortoise hobbled back, the dragon doing the same as the shuffling became a loud stomping. The door swung open politely, allowing an exceptionally large Lucario to walk out. The first thing you always seem to notice about Roy is the belly. The Dragonite needed to use all of his neck power to stop his head tilting. A thick furry blanket that draped well beyond his groin, it bounced and wobbled with every step from the jackal’s large and chubby feet. While your typical Lucario had an angular face, the apparent Roy had a face of one long line. Thick and bloated cheeks (like Blue), an army of chins, and his own ears were actually thick and round too. Yeesh, you couldn’t even see the typical chest spike it was that buried in his bountiful bosom. “No wonder they need an extra-large base” Mac noted as his eyes sketched out Roy’s vast hips and tremendous heavy legs.
“Oh, who’s this? A new commissioner?” the jackal smiled in a friendly manner.
“Actually I-”
“He’s asking to join us Roy” Blue cut in.
Roy’s lips pursed into a curious look as he eyed the far shorter Dragonite. “He does huh? Interesting” he remarked casually.
While the Lucario’s tone was kinda irritating to Mac, his mood was only enraged by how freakishly tall Roy was. Like, seriously, being fat doesn’t make you taller, so how the heck was he like, a foot taller than even a normal Dragonite? Questions for later as he was led over to a bunch of comfy couches. “Whoa!” Mac yelped as he sank into the impossibly soft padding of the closest couch.
“Oh yeah watch out for that one. We’ve had to fish a fair few people out of it” Blue joked as he squeezed in next to Roy on a fairly wide couch.
“Right” the Dragonite murmured as he tried to get comfy.
Smiling to each other, the two enormous Pokémon held hands as they eyed their new potential recruit. “So little guy, what’s your name?” Roy smiled.
“Mac” the Dragonite answered as he fought to avoid getting eaten by the couch for the fourth time.
“So Mac, why do you want to join Team Azure?” the Lucario questioned.
“Because I’ve been trying to join a bunch of teams for a while, but I keep getting rejected. So I figured maybe you guys would take me, since you’re just a two-Mon team” the Dragonite explained.
Roy and Blue looked at each other, a silent conversation occurring between the two. “And why couldn’t you find a team, exactly?” Blue inquired with slight scrutiny.
“Isn’t it obvious?” the Dragonite rhetorically replied.
“Were you rude to them?” Roy inquired. “We don’t exactly want rude team members, just saying.”
“What? No! It’s because I’m short” Mac pointed out.
“I don’t see how that’s a problem” Blue pointed out.
“Yeah, I don’t either. But apparently it’s a problem for other people” the Dragonite sighed.
Another silent conversation between the two. Were they psychic or something? “Alright, so tell us about yourself Mac” Roy requested.
“Well, I want to explore dungeons, have done since I was a Dratini. Solo work is pretty hard, even for me, so I figure joining you guys will help me live out my dream” Mac explained.
“What skills could you bring to the team?” Blue asked.
“I know a lot of useful attacks that allow me to counter a wide range of different types” Mac answered with the routine response.
“Do you like food?” Blue inquired.
“Like food? I guess” the dragon shrugged. “I mean, I like to not be hungry, but like food. I dunno.”
“Can I ask you something?” Roy requested.
“Sure.”
“You hate being small, don’t you?” the Lucario asked with the force of an armour piercing bullet.
“Wh-what’s that’s supposed to…” Mac began, but the looks he was getting told him it would be best to come clean. “Yeah, it’s obvious that I do. I’m half the size of your typical Dragonite, and I get a lot of crap for it. I’d love to be bigger, but sadly things that make you big don’t exactly grow on trees” he grumbled.
“Yes they dmmf” Blue mumbled, Roy’s hand slapped to his mouth.
“What Blue is trying to say is that we get where you’re coming from. Being the little guy isn’t fun. Still, Team Azure is very exclusive, so we’re going to need you to overcome a trial to see if you’re worthy of being a part of the team” Roy declared as he released his lover’s mouth.
“I’ll wrestle Arceus himself if it can get me on a team” the Dragonite boasted.
“But Roy we don’t” Blue protested, before realization suddenly dawning on him.
OH! Oh yeah, right, a trial. Are we talking about that trial?” he insinuated.
“I am indeed my love. We’ll see if this little guy can brave it” the Lucario smiled.
“I already said I’ll do it, so let’s stop wasting time” the Dragonite grumbled.
“Alright then, follow us” Roy grinned as he THUDDED off the couch.
For the trial, Mac had been taken into the adjoining dungeon, which was noticeably absent of any wild Pokémon. The specific room he had been taken to was filled with a large number of strange, cactus-like plants with thick clouds of pollen filling the air. The two obese Pokémon were both wearing gas-masks to protect them from the haze, but Mac wasn’t so lucky. “So, I have to brave potentially toxic pollen?” the Dragonite gasped, breathing in some small particles.
“Oh, it’s not toxic. But the effects of them can leave you a little light-headed. You just need to make it to the other side and back. It’ll be easy” the muffled voice of Roy explained.
“Alright” Mac shrugged. Scuffling through the thick grass, the Dragonite breathed slowly as he wafted through the clouds. The stuff didn’t have any kind of odour, and it wasn’t agitating his lungs either. What kind of challenge was this? It was easy as all heck. Heck, he was so confident about passing that his strides were getting longer and longer. “What the?”
Standing in the middle of the patch, Mac immediately caught on to why exactly his strides were so easy, as whatever was in that pollen was making him taller. Without warning he had already gained a foot of height, and the plants were already slipping away from him. “How do you like the challenge?” Blue laughed, his gas mask hanging from his pudgy fist.
“What’s going on?!” Mac called as he surged higher.
“Well, we wanted to show you what being on Team Azure is all about. They don’t call us the Gurus of Size for nothing” Roy grinned, his own gas mask missing. “So you’re going to take a look into what our adventures are all about” he added with a beam.
By now Mac was actually forced to hunch down, as he was growing very wary of the ceiling above. He wasn’t anywhere near it, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that he was soon to become intimate soon enough. “Whoa” he groaned, a sudden sense of vertigo striking him hard. Falling to his knees, Mac crushed one of the plants, an enormous cloud of pollen hanging around him. Breathing it in, he began to grow even faster, already surpassing the already enormous Blue in height. “How big am I even going to get?” the Dragonite called out.
“Dunno. We’ve only spent a short amount of time among the plants, but the effects for a newbie like you are only temporary anyways” Roy explained.
Well, it was kind of a relief for it to be temporary, but then, Mac wondered as he sailed past four meters, how much was permanent? Standing up at his impressive height, the dragon continued to the opposing wall with ease. Slapping it with his growing hand, the Dragonite braved the plant field, his larger feet accidentally stomping more of the bulbs, releasing more pollen into the air. Mac groaned loudly, his size vastly increasing from each ruined seed pod. His larger body was getting harder and harder to move in such a cramped space, and it was almost impossible to avoid the plants, or see a discretely hidden tree root. Snagging his foot, the Dragonite came down hard, the remaining plants crushed beneath his enormous body. Roy and Blue replaced their gas masks as the air became thick with clouds of yellow and green, and the wheezing of the giant dragon sucking in vast clouds of the stuff, his body expanding at a breakneck pace. The Blastoise gleefully pet the nose of the growing Dragonite, the vast creature growing until he was as tall as five Dragonites standing on each other’s shoulders. “Oooo~’ he groaned weakly.
“Try not to get up too fast Mac” Roy warned the dragon.
“I wasn’t trying too” Mac replied as he rolled onto his back. “So, is this the challenge? Make me grow?” he questioned.
Roy and Blue grinned at each other as they removed their gas masks, the air now clear of pollen. “Oh, it’s only half done. Next comes the second part” the Blastoise explained.
“Next part?” Mac whimpered, now a little scared.
“Yep” Roy grinned sneakily. “We’ll be back in a flash with it” he explained as he wobbled off with Blue in tow.
He wasn’t wrong, as within a few minutes the two were back with an exhaustively vast collection of food. Amongst them was an enormous keg, and those golden apples from earlier. “I… I’m supposed to eat all of that?” Mac gasped in surprise.
“Yep!” the obese Pokémon answered in unison.
“I can’t eat all that food” Mac insisted.
“You do realize you’re tall enough that three of me standing on our shoulders would only barely be as tall as you right?” Blue laughed.
“Still” Mac rumbled as he tried to move his arms. “What the?” he gasped as he realized his arms were bound by countless thick vines.
“Those plants have a self-defence feature. When popped, their roots act like vines to bind whoever damaged them, and you destroyed the entire field” Roy pointed out.
“Then how do I get out?” Mac shrieked as he struggled to break the vines.
That damn insufferable twin grin again. “Well, we can’t break the vines ourselves, but we can definitely help you burst your way out” Blue tittered as he and Roy started carrying food towards Mac.
Stacking everything around the Dragonite, the Blastoise carted up the keg first. Twisting the head off, the rich aroma of honey filled the space, eliciting some intrigued sniffs from even the dragon. “Honey?”
“From one of our adventures to an ancient Combee hive,” Roy explained, “now open wide for Blue.”
Opening only to complain profusely, Mac’s words were drowned in a torrent of thick goopy honey. He moaned weakly, his sense of taste demanding he obediently swallow the torrent, the golden nectar the tastiest thing he had ever tasted. If he could move his arms he would have taken the keg himself to scoff it down. “Awww” he whined once the entire container was empty. “I was just starting to enjoy that.”
“Then enjoy this” Roy called as he tossed several golden apples into Mac’s mouth.
Swallowing them whole, the Dragonite smacked his lips, but was confused. “What are they supposed to dOOOOOOOO!!”
Without warning, his entire body suddenly BWOMPED out dramatically, with thick layers of adipose piling onto the already chubby dragon. Writhing about in his bindings, the Dragonite was overwhelmed by a lingering sense of pleasure as blubber piled up on him. Mac’s belly jiggled about as he fought with the bindings that were starting to dig into his plump wrists. His decently sized hips widened, pushing dirt and grass aside in their wake. The dragon couldn’t shake his grin from his fattened face as his enormous body softened immensely, a feeling of contentment consoling him. “That felt… kinda nice” he admitted bashfully.
“Yeah, we thought so when we tried them” Blue grinned broadly.
“Is this what you guys do all the time? Eat weird, really fattening or biggering food?” Mac laughed.
“Pretty much. We pretty much bonded and fell in love through our weird adventures. So if you wanna be a part of Team Azure, you gotta be ready to do the same” Roy informed the big dragon.
“You guys are so weird… I’m in. You’re the first guys who gave me a chance, and I can put up with some pudge. So keep going and bust me out” the Dragonite requested happily.
“As you wish” Blue snickered as he hurled the rest of the golden apples into Mac’s waiting maw.
Swallowing hard, the Dragonite was filled with warmth as his body thickened once more, his thick belly turning into a literal hill of fat. Limbs turning doughy with blubber, the tight vines binding him started to snap one by one until he found the strength to bust them away. Arms now free from the deadly plants, Mac happily rubbed down his soft and scaly body, his jiggling arm tracing the greater scope of his truly immense belly. His other reached out for the food his teammates had brought, and crammed them into his mouth, chewing barely before swallowing hard. The Dragonite groaned happily as he continued to bloat to immense proportions, a lovely collar of blubber forming to cradle his trio of chins. “I think,” Blue whispered with a sly glance to his lover, “that Mac will be a good fit for Team Azure” he grinned.
“I think you might be right” Roy grinned back.
Thanks to that generous helping of apples, Mac was now a Dragonite of significant girth, with a belly standing tall and proud, and with enough folds and tucks to house at least a dozen Pokémon. His legs were far thicker than even the exceptionally porky Blue, and his arms could only barely bend from how thick they were. And yet, the dragon was beyond happy to snuggle into his blubber, just like Blue and Roy did. As the Dragonite grew, the two had discretely climbed atop the blubbery dragon, and had taken to lying peacefully on his soft middle. “So, am I in?” Mac rumbled from between his thick cheeks and doughy chins.
“You were in the second you were brave enough to accept our challenge” Blue grinned.
“Welcome to Team Azure Mac” Roy congratulated.
“Awesome…. Umm, if it’s not too much trouble… you got any more food? Getting this fat sure makes a dragon hungry.”
“We’ll fill you up until you burst Mac” Blue grinned cheekily.
“Yep. Now that you’re our third, we’re going to enjoy feeding you up until you’re big and strong, like us” the Lucario added.
“Eh, as long as it’s not rejection, I can live with that.”
