This is far from finished, but here's part of the animation I've been working on over my spring break. These are just the sketched drawings that have been quickly colored, so when it's inked it will look a bit different. I still need to adjust the overlapping on the ears, and finish tweaking some things. Background needs touching up with the foreground grass elements..and I need to set the mountains to scroll a loooot slower.
I did a lot in Shake with this one, which is something I'm finding I really enjoy 8D Many thanks to Adam for tutoring me!

Shake is a compositing tool, mostly used in the video industry. It's a really cool program--it's node based instead of layer based like AfterEffects (if you're familiar with that?), and you use it to adjust color, composite in different elements, green screen effects, etc. In this case, I used it to make the background scroll with the character's speed, add the contact shadow, and adjust the colors/ramp on the doggie. Here's a screenshot, if you're curious: http://kendavi.com/animation/fetch/.....cture%2016.png
Yupyup! The TVPaint part is pretty straightforward once you learn the workflow. Shake.. well, I find it pretty intuitive to use, but I'm still pretty nooby in my skillset at this point. I spent probably two hours on the Shake part alone, trying to get the scrolling of the background to work (but once I did, it was great!) By setting three keyframes for the background and the dog, Shake automatically calculates a formula to scroll the background consistently in relation to the speed of the character.
The good thing is, once you get your nodes set up in Shake, you can reuse them for other clips of footage, too. Also, the nodes you apply to your footage don't actually change the original file, which is nice. When I finish this project, I WILL have to use one more program to cut all of my clips together (I plan to use Final Cut).
I'd be all up for showing you what I know! And Adam knows even more about Shake than I do (and loves talking about it, hehe).

Preston Blair was my first guess. I have both those books, and use them all the time. They're wonderful for animation. Another one that I just got that I could recommend you, is Character Animation Crash Course by Eric Goldberg. I got to meet him at a book signing here. He's an ex-Disney animator who was the lead character animator for the Genie in Aladdin. Have fun animating! I look forward to seeing how it turns out.
eh, Shake seems far too confusing to me XD ill stick to my After Effects :3 but ya, its really coming along nicely. i just recently got TVPaint Animation my self and im totally clueless how to use it XD i watch some videos on YouTube of the basics and it helped a lil... cant wait till im done with skool to do my own animations <3
That's hard to answer, not being familiar with your project or goals for it. Personally, I really don't like Flash, but then again, I also prefer the more traditional look of raster animation. If you have a more specific example, I might be able to give my two cents :P have you been drawing/inking all of your frames in Flash so far?

Your character animation is smooth and I`d call it flawless. However the background could use a few little tweaks. The mountains should be moving very slowly relative to the speed of the ground as it is so much closer to the moving dog. Grass a little bit faster then the mountain but slower then the ground and then you`l have an animation with incorporated background, should give a neat effect. :D
