Ya my hamster is the most pissy moody scaredy lazy thing in the world... He only sleeps and eats and bangs on his door when he wants to come out and run in his ball... if you do something he doesn't like he waddles like a duck into the corner and pushes his face into the soft fluffy stuff in his cage so he can't see you, thus he is invisible and hiding. He body-slams all the big food we give him cause he can't fit any of it into his tunnels, and he fills his plastic wheel with seeds and then proceeds to run in it for HOURS, simulating the sound of someone taking a cup of beads and seashells and throwing them wildly across a tile floor in a very small echoing room. And I can't bribe the lazy bum with not a single damn treat, he just takes it all, turns away from us and devours it or stuffs it into his face or runs into a corner and hides it... then comes back for more until we're like "yea no." and he's like, "WELL FINE! I don't think you're insane, I made a similar meal for my rats! My ex and I had like 10 rats between us, so we made almost the same thing with some minor differences in each batch (like dried lentils sometimes, dog treats, or other types of nuts). They loved those banana chips, that always the first thing they went for. Do yours eat the lab blocks??? Mine never liked them.

I make a point of not giving them any more grain mix until the lab blocks in the cage have been finished. It's the most important part of their meal, I feel. The grain mix is merely a supplement... a supplement that sometimes I consider eating. Ahahaha.

I would eat it sometimes too!! My rats would go nuts over this stuff called "Nutristat" too, that was made for picky dogs or something.

I've had SAD experiences with Nutristat... sick rats that wouldn't touch it.. :\ And they died. But the stuff does its job if they would just EAT IT *cries*

Yay! you have rats too! I just have one his name is Renji and he's awesome! I feed him the pellets as well as different fruits, lettuce, eggs (he loves those) and of course oats. Never thought of dog food though. hmm...

If you go for dog food, be sure you get something of decent quality with a relatively low (less than 20%; preferably around 11-15%) protein amount.

Just as a note, rats should be kept in at least pairs, usually, unless the solitary rat doesn't get along with others.

Well, I developed an allergy, as far as we could tell, to their urine. It's apparently not all that rare. Every time I would handle them, it got to the point where I would basically break out and get a rash from it. I waited until they all passed (handled them with gloves and with benadryl cream nightly) except one and I had a home set up for him already with other ratties.

I wish I could still have them, oh god. They are such fantastic little babies. But my ferrets take so much of my time that I don't think I could do them justice at this point in my life.

Yeah I had a friend who has the same problem. He loved his little girls but after a while he couldn't hold them any more.

When he is over he puts a coat on and will let my girls crawl around him him still.
