This is my half of a book trade with
zumzumfoxy , sorry it took so long :(
The text on the cover has been translated into hieroglyphs (it's personal, so I won't repeat it), and the scarab design belongs to
zumzumfoxy as well. The whole project really didn't take that long to do (work-hours wise), but it sorta ended up getting spaced out over a lengthy time due to lots of stuff going on right now. I learned a lot of things while doing this too. Like... wetting the leather makes it = awesome and much easier to work with. And that my Crop-a-dile is AWESOME!!!
Anyone who does leather work or anything that requires punching holes through thick things repeatedly: GET ONE! It was originally $35 or $40, but I got it for $15 since I had been forced to return the first hole-punch that I bought because it was broken, so they gave me a discount and I got it for $15 (though if I'd known how awesome it was, I'd have gladly spend $40 on it). And to be honest, I'm only using the hole-punch feature on it. I've used the die setter to sorta "flatten out" bits of leather, but it's a multi-functional machine.
In his original drawings, he had a pentacle inside the scarab. When I was at the button store, I happened to find a perfect sized star to use as a bit for the leather to wrap around to hold the book closed.
Additionally, I learned the importance of making PERFECT outlines of the pieces first. I just sorta tried to "puzzle" these pieces together and trim as I went. The result is that when I started leather-bonding them together, I ended up with lost of little holes between the pieces that I had to subsequently fill with tiny leather bits. Most of these are on the back and aren't really too prevalent anymore, but they still bother me.
Oh, and did I mention the Crop-a-dile can punch through paper too? There are five booklets of paper in there consisting of 15 sheets of folded-over paper each. Originally I had planned on doing a spiral bind, but after spinning it through the first hole, I realized that it would be much easier to thread all three lines at the same time.
Anyway, if anyone's interested in trades or commissions, send me a PM and let me know.

I am utterly floored.
This thing's magnificent!! (excluding all the initial-reaction swears I let out a second ago, ROFL)
It's really beautiful! You're amazing at bookcraft :D
Thank you so much!
I'm going to work extra-hard on the illustration for the cover of yours :)

MM Xand!
I just got the book Thursday afternoon and I was FLOORED! It is the most stunning leather journal I've ever seen!! ^__^
I want to thank you again so much for the beautiful craftsmanship, skill, and time that went into making it, and that I've devoted it to be a proper Book of Shadows (I'm a Wiccan high-priest-in-training), as my prior one was 'just' printouts of work I've done, which got clunky and messy fast. It's a true joy to write in and a high honor to own =)
Yours is nearly done- I apologize in advance for the delays! :) I decided I didn't like the paper I'd used at first, so I deconstructed and am finishing remaking it. Now the covers are thicker, sturdier stuff. I kept your address, so I can send it out soon :) Also, I'm hoping to have it shipped by this Tuesday (earliest I can get to a post office- darn that they're not open saturdays!)
Thank you so very much =D
PS: I highlighted the etchings in metallic gold Prisma marker, and it looks =beautiful=; it really shows off the work you did!

It worked awesomely!!! =)
I tried to rub it off immediately (worrying that I'd ruin the look of the book- I don't usually alter others' work), but it wouldn't budge. :3 I've even done prisma marker on a very soft, thin deerskin, and that experienced only minimal fading over the years (though it smudges a bit).
