digital. 2007.
Now the finishes. Hmm.. first of all, I can see that this is going to be
problematic because of the way FA works. This is the -first- image,
and I'm going to be uploading them in sequence. However FA will
display this last in the series :P Bah!
Anyway, for the very first image I wanted to establish the setting and
mood of the "real world" to serve as a contrast for when the narrative
enters the forest.
So it's very serene, lots of horizontals. Flat lines then to evoke this
sort of thing. The most saturated colors are reserved for the trees
because in this story/world the trees are where things happen, that's
where the passions are kept :) So you get this kind of perpetual
autumn/fire/blood/heat thing going on. The cool colors (greens and
blues) are there in the sky and grass but they are very weak really.
Overall I wanted to mix a sense of bucolic rural life and the African
savannah.
Just as the Brothers Grimm fairy tales seem to take place in this magical
fantasy Germanic setting, I wanted this to take place in this mishmash
of African-americana.
For inspiration, I was looking at the lovely lovely Post Office murals that
were painted during the early 20th century as part of the New Deal, a set
of projects and jobs the government sponsored to give people work in the
middle of the Great Depression. Among these were artistic projects(!) and
lots of really skilled artisans and crafty folks were hired to beautify public
buildings. I remember the main post office in Tuskegee, Alabama had
this beautiful farmscape mural above the P.O boxes. Anyway, Google
this shit, it's awesome. Lots of softly rolling hills and muted colors :)
Hey look, it's a landscape picture :)

One of the things I admire most about your work is that you do anything. You don't restrict yourself to furry, human, mechanical..... you do landscapes, objects, abstracts.... and you are able to work in just about any medium given to you. Your work and your personality and the thought you put into your pieces just fascinates me. LOVE your stuff.
