Compositional symmetry evokes balance and serenity, too.
There aren't many diagonals or curves going on in this image.
And they associate primarily to the girl and the woods (seen
in the distance, bubbling away)

Just like I wanted the landscape to work at a glance, I wanted
the first depiction of the characters to sum up everything important.
Who they are, what their relationship is, even some indication of
motivations and thoughts, etc. There's the "young" side of the
image and "old" side. She gets the horned mask poised over her
head like a thought (an indicator for all kinds of adolescent concerns,
sex, questioning self-identity, etc.)
while mom gets the broom and the garlic (food and cleaning, domestic
indicators, sure, but also witch imagery, secret knowledge imagery)

A lot of what's going on here is obvious and transparent, so I won't
dwell on it :) I'm restraining myself from blah blah blah.
