I don't actually know the work it's from. I collect quotes like a magpie with shiny things, and I came across that quote somewhere and fell in love with it myself.

A search tells me it's from "Blood Orchid", a sort of stream-of-consciousness view of America.

Heh, thanks. My camera's ancient (from I think 2001, and it was free) and it has no exposure or brightness adjustments at all. With the flash off, it simply keeps taking in light until it has enough - I think this was several full seconds exposure. However, that handicap makes for some very interesting lighting effects.

but something irks me...Everytime I look at it I get this feeling of loneliness even though they're all socializing. huddled together around a lamp in a large empty room at night.

obviously thats not the case but that's what first initially came to me.

I did crop it wide to emphasize precisely that... the surrounding empty space, windows looking onto darkness outside. The name "Campfire" also evokes an island of light and warmth in the wilderness. My intent was to show both emptiness and togetherness in the same shot. It also shows that, unlike a restaurant or airport gathering, there is no stream of outsiders passing by, wrapped in their own separate concerns. Every single chair, lamp, table, and person has been gathered together in a single gravity well.


Also, the two shots I took from closer in, from the railing above, were much more blurred. ; >
