I saw that  mbthomas draws Steven Universe characters. I've recently really started to watch the show and enjoy it. So I made up one of my own gems and had him draw it.

Black Pearl started life as a plain, regular Pearl on the Gem Homeworld, a servant for some minor Quartz gem. As most Pearls are, she was treated as little more than a servant and decoration. That is until she was visited in visions by an entity named Obsidian. Obsidian was supposed to be a legend used to scare weak gems, an abomination who lurks in darkness. She sensed Pearl's secret anger at her position in life. Slowly Obsidian seduced and cohersed Pearl into agreeing that the Gem Hierarchy was stacked to limit the more common gems. But maybe they could change all that together. Obsidian had only come t Pearl in waking dreams, the gem's physical form was being held prisoner inside a box of pure light somewhere in the bowels of White Diamond's palace.

they devised a plan of cunning and bravery to free Obsidian from her prison. thankfully, Pearl's keeper had been invited to a social function at White Diamond's palace. All it took was Pearl slipping away when nobody was noticing, into the lower levels of the castle. It took some quick thinkingto discover how to disable the light prison, but Pearl managed to disrupt power to it long enough to plunge the box into darkness for a short moment. Once in darkness, Obsidian was able to use her power to teleport her physical self out of the prison through shadows into pearl's hand. Now free and in contact with another gem, Obsidian further seduced Pearl to the dark side.

She agreed to merge in fusion with Obsidian and together they would strike a blow for revolution by capturing White Diamond and using the noble to negotiate a New Authority. together, they became Black Pearl, a beauty with the cruel heart of a monster. the attack came sudden and many gems were destroyed by Black Pearl's sword, which is sharp enough to easily slice a gem in half and can even open a rift in reality to a pocket dimension. Pearl's own mistress Quartz was cut to pieces in the carnage and claimed as a trophy. However, even the strength of the abomination was overwhelmed by the forces protecting White Diamond. Black Pearl was forced to retreat and then flee the Homeworld in a stolen Diamond space yacht.

Black Pearl lay low on one of the colony worlds for a time. While there she learned more about her newly found abilities. She discovered that she could combine gem shards, barely kept separate by shadow essence, to create cluster gems that she could control , if just barely. After some raids she created enough gem shards to make a crew to serve as an attack force as well as fly her ship. She was ready for an assault on the Diamond Authority.

Once again however, the Authority was too well protected ad Black Pearl's attack failed. She fled in anger once more, this time pursued by the Authority fleet. She lost her pursuers in a dark nebula before fleeing to the very far reaches of the Gem Empire. She set her course for a failed colony world called Earth. There were rumors on Earth, of a planet rich in gem shards from a rebellion and hints of a Master Cluster incubating withing the planet core. Perhaps with control of it, Black Pearl could launch a successful assault on the Authority and destroy it once and for all! And so, Black Pearl came to Earth. Beware.
