Pronunciation: vehn-fow
Description: Venfou are a race of creature often taking canine or equine forms based on their surroundings. Their bodies are comprised of dead matter or carcasses be they fauna or flora (not shown here).
Food: Venfou do not eat (and may not even have useable mouths). They subsidize on collecting more and more corpsematter to sustain their rotting forms. They are thought to be something of magic or perhaps even a parasite but no dragon has found a Venfou corpse to tell. They few to watch a Venfou “feed” has described it as disturbing.
Reproduction & Sex: Venfou do not have procreative sex given their nature of living. A particularly dimwitted being may deem a Venfou’s gender based on the bits and bops hanging from it's body but it matters very little to the creature.
Variation: Venfou have a wide variety of appearances given their comprisal of the various life forms. If it dies it's fair game to a Venfou. For this reason, mold, fungus, insect larvae, and even living plant life taken seed aren't uncommon hitchhikers. They seem to morph the matter forcibly into a 4 legged form. Rarer examples of the creature has it sporting a lithe or avian body type but this seems to be solely for getting around obstacles in its territory. Venfou have 2 subtypes to its kind: Warm and Cold. As suggested, the two types are either feverishly warm to the touch or an icy cold you'd expect from a pile of moving corpses. It's unknown what causes this divide in temperature. It's thought this may be a sign of the differing sexes but given the nature of the beast it may be more viable to think it's preservation of body or aiding movement.
Behavior: A Venfou is a peculiar beast but an intelligent one. It's rare for a Venfou to go “hungry” and may even be found following around a diseased animal or person. Even resting at the foot of a dying tree. For this reason many believe them to be signs of disaster. Oddly enough the creatures, while skilled at finding them, will not try to consume a Starrobber even when touched. A Venfou will even seemingly communicate with other Venfou for a short time. While seeing a pair is not unheard of they seem to never travel in packs and are very scattered from one another.
Movement: A Venfou’s motor abilities derive from the creatures they're formed from. Their leg shape and direction is limited to their food source. That said, one can be found mixing and matching different body parts to suit them if they are available. Those without often suffer through it. Galloping, running, slithering, fluttering, and even dragging oneself from one place to the next. They are very nomadic creatures, having been spotted on all edges of the continents. Walking quite literally until they can't anymore. At the end of one's life, a Venfou may choose it's own resting place. Often choosing a location in the sun oddly enough.
Population: While fascinating and widespread nomadic creatures, Venfou are fairly small on a broad scale in terms if population. To some, they are merely myth while to others they are a common sight. To the latter, they often find themselves hunting the creatures down or scaring them away. Rotted corpses around the family isn't necessarily healthy to you or your crops. Venfou have a bad reputation of being unwanted disease bringers and often running from a fire set to their home. To many though, a Venfou may not have been known to even in the area at all until a pile of rotted meat and bone is found in the road.
Interaction with Undead: As stated, a Venfou is a glorious bloodhound when it comes to finding it's fellow undead cousin, the Starrobber. However, they will not merge or attempt to take the flesh. A Venfou may follow and even rest nearby, but never feed on one. Some think the creature is confused as life is still occurring but all its senses tell it it's dead. Others believe it's sent to find a specific Robber to aid them to a clue about their death. Starrobbers have not been reached for comment at this time.
