I drew horses -- lots of them. Especially after I started reading the Black Stallion books by Walter Farley. Then I started drawing deer, after I read Felix Salten's Bambi.
One of my favorite art books from back then was "How to Draw and Paint Hoofed Animals" by Walter J. Wilwerding (one of those big Walter F. Foster series of art books). It helped me gain some understanding of how to draw these complex animals.
