“Despite being the creator of the chakat species, even I am often surprised at how obsessive people can get over details about them, and the most contentious has always been the handpaws. They are, I admit, very difficult to get perfect because there is no direct real-life comparison, and sometimes I have wished that I never came up with the concept. Rest assured though that I was not unhappy with the result.” Bernard Doove, September 12th 2016

I usually don't start my postings with disclaimers like this from my clients but of all the sub-genres of anthropomorphic fandom the subject chakats has always been the most troublesome and contentious. So much so that Bernard is the only client that I will take chakat commissions from. Every time I have drawn chakats they have garnered far more criticism, angst, and some cases flat out hostility to the work than any other subject matter I've drawn. What more amazing is that it is the fans, not the creator who have created this friction.
So I will state right now if you comment to this posting solely to start an argument or to tell me that I am doing it wrong you'll probably have your comments blocked or hidden. My client was happy with the results and that is all that matters. I am posting it for a couple of reasons. First because it is Patreon reward I did for one of my long time supporters and clients who has followed me for literally decades, and second because if I didn't post it I am pretty sure folks would start asking me to do it anyways.

Yep it is amazing what we as humans can get obsessive over, and the arguing over minute details is a fan thing. However when even the creator gets tired of it I think it's gone to far, and when the comments and criticism moves from "I have a problem/ issue with how you drew this" to what I got about a decade ago which was:
"Look if you're not going to draw them the right, then do us all a favor and go break your drawing hand so you can't draw them anymore!"
That is when I walk away from the subject.

Yeah. that's just redunkulous.
Then again, ponies! People love to complain about them even though... ponies! If you don't like something, move on. Seriously, I hate when folks are like "Hey, that art looks like something I would hate, let me go look at it REALLY HARD". I don't know why you'd do that. I think there's a movie clip from Star Trek: Generations that applies here.

"I hate this! It is revolting!"
"More?"
"Please."

Eeyup! When I started working in retail I learned one important lesson that helped me keep my sanity.
When a person compliments about you count them that as being ten compliments. Folks often won't take the time to thank you for a job well done.
When a person complains about you count them as being one complaint. If folks have a problem they are far more likely to say something about it.
It also applies to comments on places like FA and DA.

so about the time I learned about Chakats and was inspired by the level of worldbuilding, people were crazy and it was already past its prime? huh. story of my life.
Thus far, I have simply enjoyed when people made something of this species, different characters, different interpretations, I had no idea the shape of the paws brought about death threats. Out of a setting that's core message is tolerance and Star Trek-style utopia... at least, I thought it was...
Anyway, if, A. The species creator and B. someone with 30-odd years of professional artwork are happy with this version, it stands. Not that I was gonna read much into this, until I saw all the Wards Against Hate tacked onto it.
IMHO for every rabid fan, compliment OR complaint, there are 10 more who are mild-mannered and still on their hinges, and thus, silent, 90% of the time. My 2 bits.

For the most part I just shake my head and go about my business. I posted the email response to also point out that maybe folks should stop and think about how much we often attach our ego to other folks intellectual property. I have seen it other communities as well, and my response to it is always.
"It's not your property or creation, and we get to play with it only because the creator is being generous. Please keep that in mind before they revoke it for everyone."

Hands alone are bullshit alone to draw, don't ever complain about handpaws until you realize this and can draw a hand perfectly. That's how I would deal with people who complain about that sorta thing.
Never understood complaining about made up creatures anatomy when you can at least get the general idea and draw it well enough that should be celebrated and leaves room for improvement the next time you draw it. People shouldn't discourage like that or they will never get a correct anatomy from an artist because of said discouragement.
That said your chakat is very lovely here. Shi looks very mischievous.

The handpaw is a simple idea (paws that can both grab and be walked on) that's complicated in practice. For that matter, hands themselves are insufferably complicated, adding "walk on them" to the requirements makes it worse.
Overreaction to disliking something has become endemic, and not just with artwork (particularly free artwork). It used to be just bullies and trolls, the people who got off by inflicting pain (emotional or physical) on others. Now it's like they've either seized power or learned new tactics to avoid the consequences of their actions.
And I like this one!

I like chakats because of the detailed universe built around them. I generally try to follow Goldie's instructions (on the Chakat's den) on how they're supposed to look. Problems occur when there are people who like to add things to the 'kats that don't exist in that universe. This is where that infighting you see starts.
That's the issue with written fiction when it becomes popular. People's fantasy create their own image of personages, items places.. and every reader got own version of world in his head. That's why most of movie based on "big" books get same reception from those who do not understand that movie is just an artist's vision, a moving illustration to the book, it cannot and should not repeat every word and line from the book, because it need to benefit from different time constraints, different tools and target not only reader but remaining audience toom tge way how they imagine it isn't the same way how the artist saw it
I had no idea that was going on with chakats...man I must really be out of the loop...
I wonder if
SethTriggs gets flak...he draws the Tales of Chakona series on his page.
I wonder if

I think you did a wonderful job on Goldie. Hir proportions fit your style as does hir build. I think Goldfur would envy looking this good.
One thing you did that many don't, is you treated the lower torsos shoulders as a pair of hips as it should be. Many artists make the upper torso an extension of the neck when it is not.
Over the years there has been much discussion over many of the details of a Chakat. Including how the handpaws would work, one artist did some detailed drawings of just the handpaws.

Drawing Chakitties seems to bring out a lot of contriversory.[sp??] A lot of versions have the "cat" part a lot larger in proportion to the upper torso. I think your proportions seem more believable. Whatever, if Goldie likes it, then it's right. And the "handpaws
seem to be workable. THE COLONEL
seem to be workable. THE COLONEL
Pay no mind to the haters and those who have way more ego than sense. So what if the details aren't exact down to the most miniscule nuance, it's called artistic license for a reason!
Goldie looks wonderful as always and one would have to have their head seriously far up their keister to argue the what and who this is a pic of.
I've been in love with your artwork since ASB, please keep it coming!

I used to draw the Chakat Paw-Hands (Or "Phands" as I like to call them.) pretty similar to the way you drew them here. I liked doing them that way as they made the creature's gestures far more expressive, and I believed they'd be better suited for working in Microgravity situations. One of my favorite images showed young Chakat Quickpaw during her early training to become a midwife. The way shi's wringing hir Paw-hands and nearly dropping the tray tells it all.

Anyway, I like your interpretation of the character.
