Two characters who could never happen today.
Daws Butler did a whole range of memorable, distinctive voices for what has to be close to half of Hanna-Barberra's cast of characters. It just happened that a couple of those characters' voices were (by modern reckoning) wildly, explosively gay.
So yeah, I can only imagine what these two would have to say to one another.
WG: "Who thought this lavender hat was a good idea? And the collar-and-cuffs? Goodness!"
SP: "They're tawdry. Chippendales, even!"
CAPTIONS AT THE READY, FOLKS. Gimme your best shot. I'll probably shove this in the scraps bin in a bit.
Exit, stage right~! *zoom*

This is the WEIRDEST thing I have ever seen you do! I have some HB cartoons and yah, Snags is FLAMINGLY gay. Wally I don't remember well enough to say, but I'll take your word for it. Interesting that almost all of the HB characters were guys and the few females were generally add-ons, or 'girlfriends' instead of being thought out, full characters of their own. You get major points for this, dood!
Yeah, dude. I have NO IDEA why I drew this. Well, other than to procrastinate actual work 9_9
Snags is very Cowardly Lion's Gay Cousin, where Wally is more Goofy Gay. Which is gayer would be a tough call.
And you're totally right that H-B's was a hypermasculine world in terms of population density. And all the partner characters were male sidekicks instead of girlfriends, who showed up only sporadically, while the Booboos and the Baba Looeys were ever-present. Highly suspect!

The problem is that if someone wanted to do a Snagglepuss today, they'd be making a political statement instead of a funny cartoon character.
I mean, there were idiots calling Spongebob gay -- a big pink cat with an over the top gay speech affect and a chippendales suit would be fish in a barrel.

Dude, you don't suck, you're just like 12. Although, to be fair, it's not like I was exactly around in the 60's when these guys were first airing either. I just grew up on quality reruns is all.
But yes, these two did their best to burn through your TV with their flametastic acting.

Oh, all those old cartoons had a certain class to them -- even the really dumb ones. Maybe it's just nostalgia talking, but it seems like they had a sort of casual ease to them in a way that most modern cartoons just don't. It makes the contemporary stuff seem like it's trying to hard, or at least makes it all feel hyper-marketed by comparison.
That's true... I'm not saying I hate all of them, far from that! I just can only stand a couple of them anymore because some of the humor is quite outdated, but I do get a real kick out of the majority of it. Huckleberry Hound and the original Scooby Doo are prime examples of ones I can still watch and fully enjoy. ^^
ha! another simpson's bit for ya involves huckleberry hound on the fake promo for "behind the laughter" going "i was soooo gay, but i couldn't tell anyone!" similarly, this:
