Petie arrives to see what he can learn from Taiho... but can the teddiursa actually LEARN anything from the sport of sumo? Do the techniques of big fat guys in loincloths translate well to a small but chubby baby in a diaper? And what does Petie think when he finds out about the slowbro's crush on Rose? Read to find out!
Please enjoy, fav & comment, and have a great day! =D

There were many gyms in the Pokemon Combat Academy from large ones designed for the practice of whole teams to one designed to simulate specific type-related climates for training to use of resist that type and most of the gyms had waiting lists a week long to reserve time to train. Most of the big or unique ones anyway since there were several smaller ones that often went unwanted or unused due to their size, placement, or lack of anything to make them unique or interesting. They did however prove to be excellent places for privacy if you were doing something weird or that you didn’t want people to walk in on. One of these gyms happened to be where Petie and Rose Julafton were heading at the moment. One of them under protest.
“Rose? Why did I agree to this idea again?”
“Dunno, I thought it had something to do with him helping Anne but really how am I supposed to know? Not exactly psychic after all~”
“Eh…”
Petie’s decision DID have something to do with how Taiho had helped Anne out… but honestly the teddiursa had been so focused on his really full tummy when they’d asked him if he’d wanted to train with the slowbro that he’d agreed without really paying attention. But admitting that would be the same as saying he had a little kids attention span, and that was more humiliation than he wanted to endure. He’d been trying to think of some way to back out of this in the two days since then… preferably without looking like he was just trying to get out of it, but he’d had no luck. Especially since Rose had been great at unintentionally guilting him into giving it a try. So he was gonna have to have a lesson in poke-sumo… whatever use he could possibly get out learning a little of the sport of fat mon running into each other. Either way it wasn’t like wearing one of those ma-whatever diapers would be any worse that what Rose put him in regularly, especially since the slowbro had already found out about the teddiursa’s padding…
Of course there was something that’d been bugging Petie about the fat psychic/water type… the teddiursa just couldn’t place it. He’d gotten the feeling there was something weird going on after Rose and Taiho had set up the training date and he’d had a chance to think back over what’d happened… no matter how unpleasant remembering that brawl the two older mon had WILLINGLY started and called a sparring match. That meeting, inviting them over for food, willingly offering to train Petie despite barely knowing him… thinking over everything it reeked like the teddiursa’s diaper pail. He just couldn’t figure out WHY it struck him as so suspicious… it brought to mind the toddlers at the orphanage playing with those shaped peg toys and not understanding why the star peg couldn’t fit through the triangle hole. He was missing SOMETHING. Either way he wasn’t looking forward to this as they finally arrived at the single door to the gym where Taiho was supposed to be waiting.
Rose pushed the gym door open and Petie braced himself, not sure what to expect… only to be surprised that all Tiaho had done was spread out some gymnastic mats on the floor, a gym bag sitting on one of them, and move a training bag towards the middle of the gym. After seeing the slowbros room he’d almost expected him to transform the whole gym into something out of an anime. Speaking of the fat mon himself Taiho was walking over to greet them with open arms, fortunately still wearing pants over the sumo loincloth he probably had on “Rose! Petie! I’m very happy you could make it!” he said, a broad grin on his equally broad face as he stopped in front of them “It was like you said, this gym was free to it was easy so schedule training time here… and it is out of the way enough that no one should walk in on us.” He added, being polite enough not to add “and embarrass Petie” even if the teddiursa in question was pretty sure that’s what he meant. Either way the suspicious beat cub was already finding himself annoyed with this conversation.
Probably because Taiho seemed like he was completely focused on talking to Rose instead of the teddiursa despite him being part of the conversation. Something Petie had dubbed “Conversation & a Baby” due to how often it happened, particularly when he happened to be with Momma and she talked with another adult. He was part of the conversation without actually having any input in it like he was too little to have anything meaningful to say. Naturally like everything else that made him feel like a toddler Petie hated it… but it didn’t seem to be what was wrong here. “Are you sure you’re going to guard the door Rose? You’re welcome to sit in during the training.” Taiho said, his squinty eyes making his expression hard for Petie to read. “Naaaaaaa, maybe after you finish getting him ready~ Don’t wanna have anybody walk in and see my baby bro in his undies, right?” the kangaskhan said smiling down to Petie and once again being annoyingly casual about the issue that defined his teen life… in the teddiursa’s opinion anyway. Petie just nodded weakly, going along with everything to get this over with quicker as he watched Rose turned to leave…
“Your sister is really something~”
And that comment finally managed to help Petie fit the star peg through the star shaped hole of the baby toy in his brain. Especially since he also noticed that Taiho had been watching Rose with a familiar dumb look on his face. The same dumb look he’d seen on Dai’s face when she thought nobody was watching her watch girls like Rose, or on the faces of those guys who tried to ask him to help set them up on dates with his big step-sister! Taiho had a crush on Rose! Petie began to fit the other peg toys through the slotted holes in his mind, putting it all together as he watched Taiho dig what looked like long strip of cloth out of his gym bag. This fat mon was using him! He was using him to get to Rose! He was… was… um… maybe he was. Petie’s accusatory thought process ground to a halt as he struggled to make the last peg fit through the wrong hole. Could he be sure Taiho was just using him? It did make sense with him offering to train Petie, if he had a crush on Rose it’d be a great way to get closer to her… but it didn’t seem right. The slowbro didn’t seem like the other guys who drooled over Rose and just wanted to get into his big sister’s panties so was the teddiursa right assuming he was the same as then…
“-etie… Petie? Are you okay? Petie?”
“Huh?” Blinking Petie finally realized Taiho had walked over, kneeled down in front of him, and been trying to get his attention while the teddiursa had been too caught up in his thoughts to notice. “Are you sure your up for this? You seemed to be really lost in thought there.” The slowbro said, somehow managing to look concerned despite his squinty expression “What was on your mind?” Opening his mouth on reflex to answer Petie let it hang open for a second… before shutting it and biting his lip. The question of what would happen if he answered honestly running through his mind now, would Taiho even admit it if Petie did accuse the slowbro of using him? He could just lie and say he wasn’t and it wasn’t like Petie could force the issue since he doubted the slowbro would even FEEL it if he attacked him or anything. What should he do…? “Don’t worry so much, just say what’s bothering you okay?” the slowbro spoke up again, reading the teddiursa’s face as clearly as if it’d been a story book as Petie blushed with shame. Pulling himself up as tall as he could and taking a deep breath Petie opted to take the advice and just blurted out what was on his mind, only barely avoiding shouting it as loud as he could.
“ARE YOU USING ME TO TRY AND GET A DATE WITH ROSE!?”
There was a moment of stunned silence as Petie inwardly cringed, terrified he might have yelled loud enough to bring Rose barging in… but since the door didn’t slam open it seemed like his reedy little kids voice hadn’t been able to reach the needed volume. Instead the big reaction came from Taiho as the slowbro’s eyes opened wide along with his mouth in a shocked expression of surprise as he managed to let out a confused sounding “What?” in response. “What? What? Wha… no! No! No I’m not!” Taiho finally managed, still sound flabbergasted by the accusation. Making Petie blush harder in embarrassment “B-bu yu wike her! Er… like her! I know you do!” he stuttered out, not willing to admit he’d assumed incorrectly. It was Taiho’s turn to blush as he looked away, up at the door, for a moment before looking back to Petie “Is… is it that obvious?” his tone sounding genuinely surprised. “Yeah, it really is. It was plain as your huge gut and-” Petie was winding up into a rant… but stopped short when he remembered how dense his big sister was “and Rose probably never noticed it.” He grumbled before glaring at the taller mon “But how am I supposed to believe you didn’t offer to train me just to get close to her?” the teddiursa demanded, not willing to give up on his accusation just yet.
Petie watched Taiho take a deep breath and exhale, his massive stomach shaking as he did so, before slowbro placed his hands on the smaller mon’s shoulders. “Petie, I will confess I have feelings for Rose even though I don’t know if they’re any more serious than a crush…” Taiho’s voice was heartfelt and sincere as he spoke, looking the normal type in the eyes as he did so “But I absolutely assure you that using you to get closer to your sister is not and was never my plan. I WOULD like to ask Rose out on a date… when I come to grip with what I am feeling for her, but I want to know her better first and would like her to accept of her own will instead of because of some cheap manipulations.” Petie blinked, aware of the dazed, stupid look on his face as he tried to take in what Taiho was saying even as the slowbro continued talking “And I will be perfectly fine if she says no… I think, I will admit I’ve never really had a crush like this before so I’m out of my depth.” Taiho scratched his bandanna covered head with one finger before shrugging “Anyway I am not using you to get to your sister… though I WILL confess I might be using you for another purpose.”
“Wike wha?” the stunned Teddiursa mumbled, more used to people trying to hit on Rose or worse that this had caught him complete flat footed. “I’ll be more than happy to explain… but since I’ve only reserved this gym for two hours would you mind if I helped you into your mawashi while I do so?” Taiho held up the cloth strip he’d gotten out of his bag earlier for emphasis “You’ll need to take your pants and shirt off though, I’m pretty sure this’ll fit over your… undies.” Still numb Petie was only vaguely aware and appreciative of Taiho being sensitive about his diapers as he nodded and clumsily stripped down to them. The slowbro getting to work putting the sumo diaper over Petie’s diaper though jarred the teddiursa out of his stunned state. Petie was more than used to having others dress him like he was too little to do it himself. Rose did it pretty often with the costumes she made him and while Momma was getting better about it she still slipped into helping Petie into his clothes like a toddler fairly often. It annoyed the little bear cub in the extreme… and Taiho working the strip of cloth between Petie’s legs and slowly winding and weaving it around his middle to form the mawashi achieved that exact same reaction.
“You see Petie, part of what I’m hoping to achieve while I’m at the PCA-” the slowbro said as he worked to tie the loincloth onto the squirming bear “is to awaken some interest in Poke-sumo. To do that I have to be able to properly teach it to people and show them it’s more than just a silly sport for fat people.” He paused, apparently waiting to see if Petie had anything to say… though the bear cub held his tongue since Taiho had beaten him to the fat people comment. “So I’m using you, as you put it, to see if I can actually teach sumo-” the psychic/water type continued due to Petie’s silence “or in this case, the stuff involved in sumo that’s actually useful when it comes to arena battling since I know you could care less about the ceremony and traditions to it, right?” the tone was friendly and slightly amused as Taiho circled the mawashi around Petie’s tummy for what had to be the seventh time. The teddiursa squirming even more by this point as he thought of some tactful way of telling Taiho he was exactly right about how little Petie cared about that stuff… and upon failing to think of any way to say that without being rude Petie opted to change the subject. “How come you’re so obsessed with sumo anyway?” he asked, only realizing that was also kind of rude after he’d finished saying it, as Taiho pulled the cloth around his tummy once again.
“Well… I suppose you could blame my upbringing for that.” The slowbro stopped tying the loincloth for a moment as he sounded almost wistful “You see I was raised in a sumo stable, that’s what you call dojos that teach sumo-” he quickly added, helping to rid Petie of the image of really fat diapered horse pokemon that’d popped into his head “in a town that practiced it regularly with competitions and a big yearly tournament people came from all over to watch and participate in.” Taiho resumed tying the mawashi, still talking as he did so “And my dad was a yokozuna too, that’s the highest rank a sumo can have, before the incident happened so I guess all that is why I’m so focused on it. Any other questions?” Without thinking Petie blurted out the first question that came to mind “Incident? What happened?” before blushing as he realized what he said, the phrase “tactless toddler” coming to mind description wise. The fact Taiho let out a deep sigh in responce made Petie brace himself as the slowbro resumed talking “Well… please keep in mind that I greatly looked up to my father when I was a young slowpoke. He was kind to me and mom, encouraging, supporting… I knew he had a temper, didn’t like to lose, and tended to train himself into a frenzy but I was too young to think anything of it…” Petie just nodded, listening and trying to picture what Taiho’s father had been like… an endeavor which came to a screeching halt as the slowbro continued.
“So it was rather shocking to see him murder another sumo with his bare hands for beating him in the tournament.”
“WHAT!?” Petie blurted out, turning around sharply to look up the larger mon in shock and disbelief. “Everything okay in here?” Petie was too stunned to look at what he guessed was Rose poking her head in to see what that noise had been. Taiho just looked up and replied “We’re fine, just answering a few of Petie’s questions is all. I think I surprised him a bit but we’re about to start his training.” in a perfectly calm voice as if nothing was wrong and he HADN’T just said he’d seen his dad kill somebody. “Oh, alright… um… is his loincloth supposed to be doing that?” Rose replied, making the stunned teddiursa glance down and blush bright pink when he saw his sharp turn had unwound a little of the untied mawashi and it was drooping over his legs. “Er… no, but it’s no problem. Just need to wind it back around him a little.” Taiho said, getting to work doing that even as Rose called back “Alright, let me know when you two get started then. I’ll keep watch out here till then~” and Petie heard her shut the door. Confused, humiliated, and slightly upset due to the former two the teddiursa just stood there trembling slightly as Taiho worked to fix the loincloth… silently hoping the slowbro would explain what the heck had happened and a little scared he might actually do so.
“My father is still in jail for that… probably will be for life. I don’t care to pretend seeing that didn’t damage or traumatize me, even if I’m not sure what exactly it did, but I’ve come to terms with it over the years.” Taiho continued, Petie vaguely drawing comparisons to the few stories Rose had told him of her birth mother’s abuse and mistreatment of her with how calm the slowbro sounded… and like with those stories it left the teddirusa unnerved “But the after effects of what he did are what I’ve had to deal with since. Naturally having the big star of your stable publicly murder someone who beat him ruins your reputation… and my family has been on hard times since. We’ve recovered a little bit and there’s some new members in the stable but…” things were silent for a moment as Taiho trailed off in the middle of his sentence. Which did nothing to put Petie’s nerves at ease as he fidgeted even more… before squeaking in surprise as Taiho firmly tugged the loincloth strap and, from what the teddiursa could feel, started tying it into a knot right over Petie’s rounded puffball tail. With a quick spin Petie found himself facing the slowbro as he finished the last adjustment on the mawashi and tucked the loose strip at the front in.
“There.” Taiho nodded approvingly before leaning back a little, still kneeling in front of Petie “Anyway lets just say that if I can get some people interested in poke-sumo, maybe spread the word about my hometown, or even get into the leagues and spread the word there-“ the slowbro said, Petie waddling back and forth on his feet trying to get a feel for the mawashi… it was a bit like wearing a pair of briefs over his diapers (something the teddiursa had tried back in grades chool in a pitiful attempt to hide he’d been put back in baby undies) “then the good it’d do for my family and our sumo stable would more than outweigh abandoning some of the traditions of the sport to craft my arena fighting style, or at least that’s what I tell myself.” To his surprise Petie noticed a small note of sadness in Taiho’s tone at the end of that as he blinked and watched the slowbro get back up on his feet… and promptly drop the baggy black pants he was wearing. Revealing he was already sporting a mawashi underneath them like Petie had guessed as he watched the larger mon walk over to stand on the gymnastic mats before motioning for the bear cub to follow.
Toddling over to him, still not used to the mawashi hugging his diaper, Petie just stared up at Taiho, utterly lost as to what was supposed to happen now. Stretching a little Taiho just smiled down at the confused bear “So… Rose tells me you’ve been working on your balance?” the question was confusingly casual… or like everything about the slowbro from Petie’s point of view just plain confusing. “Yeah… Momma signed me and my best friend up for it to help with our balance ‘cause we were falling down and tripping some when we were running and dodging in the arena…” Petie answered reluctantly, he preferred not to think about his shameful early few matches and how humiliating they’d been. “I see… how are you at shifting your center of gravity?” Taiho asked next… as Petie just stared up blankly at him. He’d heard that term plenty of times before and he could try to guess about it, but as for what it actually MEANT well “Um…” he fidgeted a little, trying to decide if he should admit to being clueless about it or try to fib about it. Suddenly he felt Taiho place a large hand on his head gently as if patting it in a “Good Boy” gesture… then Petie hit the mat back first. His feet flying in the air as he bounced against the soft cushion, the teddiursa’s world spinning as he had NO idea what the heck just happened.
“See? If you’d known a bit about how to shift your center of gravity I wouldn’t have been able to throw you that easily.” Taiho explained, as if Petie had any idea what he’d done, as the slowbro squatted down next to the dazed freshmen “I just had to tip you a little so you were off balance and give a little shove and you were flat on your back before you realized what happened. Now-” using one large hand to help Petie up onto his shaking legs Taiho patted his impressive stomach with the other “lets see if you can knock ME down. Go on, shove all you want~ Try and get even~” Between how confused and dazed he was Taiho’s teasing tone made the teddiursa see red as Petie took him up on that offer. After taking a moment to steady himself Petie THREW his small body against Taihi’s impressive gut with all the force he could muster… and found his little feet slipping and kicking against the mat as it was trying to push a tire wrapped around a buried post. The stomach itself gave a tiny bit to his shoving, though a lot less than Petie expected since he’d thought it’d be soft and pudgy like fat bellies were supposed to be, but the slowbro himself didn’t budge an inch. Struggling and trying to apply the martial arts he’d learned Petie shoved, pushed, pulled, tugged, and tried to leverage against the slowbro’s stomach to knock him over or so much as budge him… but he might as well have been trying to move a sleeping snorlax. Taiho simply wouldn’t budge.
Finally Petie collapsed backwards on his butt, breathing heavily due to the exertion and fuming at his failure. “Notice how I’m squatting like this?” Taiho finally said, not bothering to wait for Petie to answer since the teddiursa was still out of breath “I’ve lowered my center of gravity as close to the ground as I can, I can’t really do anything super mobile like this but it makes moving me with attacks or blows incredibly difficult.” The last part would have gotten a comment from Petie about it being obvious, but the teddy was too busy fuming over his “defeat” to bother… especially since he was trying to see how this would be useful to HIM. “So even with that cute little tubby tummy of yours-” Taiho poked Petie’s exposed tummy for emphasis, much to the bear cub’s annoyance “you just don’t have the mass or leverage to budge me. Understand?” he finally concluded, Petie was still in the fuming and annoyed state by that point. He understood just fine (sorta)… but the teddiursa STILL didn’t see how this would be worth learning. Even if he did lower his center of gravity he was small and light enough most of his opponent would probably just be able to pick him up (an event that fortunately hadn’t happened yet… but it was probably just a matter of time) with minimal effort if they wanted.
“Now watch closely.” Taiho suddenly said, getting up out of his squat and lumbering over to the training bag… leaving Petie with a view of the slowbro’s massive hermit shell on his tail, which was staring at the teddiursa. With a soft, gentle expression… which just made it weirder as far as Petie was concerned. Luckily Taiho moved to the side so Petie could see him and the standing training bag better. Suddenly Taiho bend his knees a little and shifted one leg back a little before raised his arms into a fighting stance. Memories of the brawl between him and Rose flashing in front of Petie’s mind briefly before there a sudden motion and thunderous noise made the bear jump in shock, bottom crinkling and bouncing off the padded mats again. Taiho had suddenly slid his back leg forward and snapped the corresponding arm out in an open handed straight thrust, hitting the training bag hard and making it rock back on its weighted base. As the bag rocked back the way it came Taiho slid the leg he’d moved back again with a smoothness and grace that seemed alien to how fat he was, rotating his whole body as he did so and letting the back rock forward to fill the space he’d been in… before hooking it with the open palm of his other arm and continuing his rotation to shove the teetering bag all the way over and drive it into the ground with a downward straight thrust, creating an even louder impact.
Once again Petie sat there, trying to process what’d happened, as he heard the door open once more. “Okay, what was it this time?” Rose asked, peeking her head in… and the dazed teddy could her stifle a giggle “Hey Petie, that looks cute over your diaper buuuuuuut I don’t think it hides it well~” Normally Petie would pout, sulk, or whine at that humiliating (but sadly true) comment… but he was still looking at the training dummy Taiho had pinned to the floor. “Ah, was just showing Petie what you can do with momentum and shifting your center of gravity.” The slowbro said turning to look at the kangaskhan. With that vague explanation and playing what’d happened back step-by-step in his head Petie, much to his own surprise, actually found himself starting to understand what’d been done a little. The momentum, if Petie understood it right, was the training dummy rocking back and forth. When it’d rocked away from him Taiho had pushed it too keep the momentum going one way and force it over… but what did your center of gravity have to do with that. Suddenly feeling a pair of familiar claws around his middle the teddiursa looked up to find Rose lifting him off his bottom and setting him on his feet… if he’d had to guess he’d been too busy trying to puzzle out what was going on to notice her entering or walking over.
“So that’s what you’re gonna be teaching him?”
“Yes, that was my plan anyway.” Taiho nodded in response to Rose’s question, Petie realizing he’d missed what the older mon had been saying too. “Sounds like a good plan… sorry I won’t be able to join in but-” Rose suddenly knelt down mid-sentence and Petie squeaked as she poked the diaper plastic peeking out around his loincloth “With my baby bro’s diaper easy to see like this I think it’ll work out better if I keep guarding the door~” Standing back up, and leaving a blushing teddiursa behind, Rose headed back to the door “Best of luck with the training Petie~” and with that she was gone leaving Petie alone with Taiho once more. “Um…” the teddiursa fidgeted a little as he finally looked up at his instructor “… how does this whole center of gravity thing play into what you just did?” he asked, deciding to take a page from Rose’s book and just bluntly state it. Humiliation at the fact he was admitting he apparently had a toddler’s attention span notwithstanding. Humiliationg that Taiho’s comment of “Oh? Thought you listened to what I was telling your sister…?” made that much worse as Petie’s cheeks glowed pink with blush as he opted to just shake his head. Only realizing a moment later in hindsight how much more childish it must have made him look.
“Well…” Taiho scratched his bandana clad head with one finger for a moment “Have you ever been told to put your full weight into a punch or anything?” he waited for Petie to answer, but opted to continue anyway after it became clear the teddiursa wasn’t sure what he was talking about “Depending on how you move, use momentum, and adjust your center of gravity you can… well… huh, what’s a good analogy for this…” Petie just stared as Taiho resumed scratching his head for a moment… before the slowbro lifted one leg and placed his foot lightly on the training dummy, the padding barely pushing in despite how heavy the sumo had to be. “See? I’m putting as little of my weight as possible on the bag, the rest is being supported on my other leg. Now if I shift my center of gravity…” Taiho leaned and shifted position slightly and suddenly his foot pressed down HARD on the training dummy leaving a large impression in the padding “And now my weight is equally distributed… maybe a little more on the bag than my free leg but you get the idea. This same thing can be applied to attacks and movement.”
Finally stepping off the training dummy and tugging it back upright Taiho continued “By shifting your center of gravity and controlling how you use your weight you can do small movements and reactions quicker and use mass to put more force behind a blow than you’d be able to normally.” Petie nodded a little, grasping the idea even if he wasn’t sure how exactly it worked or if he could even do it… as Taiho kept talking “Also once you learn how to do it properly it’s easy to learn how to use it AGAINST your opponent. See where their center of balance is and use it to trip them up or knock them over, that’s one of the basics of sumo. Oh, also there’s little tricks like moving with the force of a blow instead of just letting it hit you to lessen the damage but that’s more advanced, lets stick with the basics for now.” Taiho finally finished… as Petie was pretty sure he was now sporting the same vacant look he got whenever Rose went into long, rambling descriptions of how moves work and other battle related stuff. He KINDA followed what was being said… but he still had no idea how he was supposed to actually learn to DO any of that stuff.
“Now, lets start with some squatting to help build up your legs.” The slowbro said as he walked over to Petie and dropped into that sumo squat he’d done before “Like this, despite not using any kicks leg strength is very important in sumo… and several other fighting styles. Most of this stuff requires strong legs to do and… um…” Petie inwardly groaned as he recognized the awkward pause that experience told him was gonna lead to a comment about his diapers, height, appearance, or maybe “I don’t know if it’s your undies or the mawashi but you’ve been waddling pretty noticeably, building up some leg strength wouldn’t hurt.” Diapers it was then as Petie blushed, groaned, and dropped down into his best imitation of the squat Taiho was doing… before promptly toppling forward and kissing the mat. Groaning and rubbing his nose, his cheek red due to embarrassment instead of the impact, Petie could only blush hard as Taiho helped him up, not even getting out of his squat as he did so, and moved the teddy into the proper position with embarrassing ease. Adjusting Petie’s leg positioning and stance and gently pushing the teddiursa down into position with a large hand on his head. Soon the freshmen was in a proper sumo squat instead of his earlier pose… but both felt like he was squatting down like a toddler to have an accident to the teddiursa.
Not that Taiho seemed to be aware of this as the slowbro praised his pupil. “There, knew you’d get it. Not so hard now is it? You just need to get used to balancing in the position and having all your weight distributed like this.” he said, using one large hand to steady Petie as the teddiursa’s ankles were already starting to ache “Now, try to hold this pose for a couple minutes. Whenever you feel like you can’t hold it anymore just sit down and stretch your legs a little, after you recover we’ll move on to some other training.” Taiho explained as Petie wondered if this was doing anything for his legs, other than making them hurt, and if this training would actually do anything for him. He wasn’t a sumo (diapers and baby fat aside) any more than he was a normal battler… the little teddy’s fragile self-confidence wasn’t quite able to carry the idea he could improve any. Despite how often Rose tried to hammer that into him. After all… Petie was just… well… himself, and that wasn’t a good thing as far as the teddiursa was concerned…
“Want to share what you look so glum about? Know this doesn’t hurt that bad so what’s wrong?”
Taiho’s comment made Petie go right back to blushing, this time at how easy his expression was to read. Petie bit his lip debated lying... but the only fib he could come up with about what was bothering him was that he needed a change. “Do… do you think this’ll really help me any?” he finally said, not even looking up to his instructor as he said it. The teddy wobbled, nearly losing his balance and face-planting again, in surprise when the response was a genuinely amused sound belly laugh from the slowbro. “Of course!” Taiho exclaimed, sounding like it was the most obvious thing in the world “I wouldn’t be teaching you if I didn’t have confidence this’d help you. Of course… it won’t help right away, but you’ve got to get better step by step or however people say it.” By now Petie was staring at Taiho, trying to see if the large mon was pulling his leg or teasing him or something… but there was no trace of anything other than confidence in Taiho’s broad, smiling face. Petie turned his head to stare at the ground again, feeling embarrassed by the slowbro’s confidence in him… and a little scared. He already worried about disappointing Rose’s big expectations of him, now he had to deal with Taiho’s as well? As shameful as it was to admit he was kinda missing when he was younger and more bratty… all he had to do was be cute and bring home good grades and Momma praised him like he was the smartest boy in the world. Now that he ditched the brattiness everything was so much harder…
“But I know you can put this stuff to use and it’ll help you improve your fighting style, so don’t go worrying about that alright?” Taiho’s reassurance didn’t do much for Petie’s mood… but it did partially derail the teddiursa’s train of thought. He had to forgo the depressing line it’d be on in favor of re-centering his balance to keep from falling over. As much as his ankles ached from squatting like this he wasn’t gonna plop on his butt THIS soon… hopefully. But thanks to how split Petie’s focus was between trying to keep his balance and his depressed worrying from earlier Taiho’s next comment caught him off guard and train wrecked any focus he had. “Just let me know next time you want to set up another training session, any time after Thursday is good.” His ankles finally gave out as Petie plopped on his bottom with a crinkle, unable to keep from blurting out “Why after Thursday? What’s happening then?” like a curious preschooler.
“About two minutes, not bad for a start. Sit and stretch your legs for a bit.” The slowbro focused on Petie falling over, still maintaining his own sumo squat as if nothing had happened, before bothering to address the question “As for Thursday… that’s when I’m having my first official match at the PCA, I’ve been matched up against one of the heads of the former wrestling club.” Petie was silent for a moment, rubbing his legs and wondering if Taiho’s comment about leg strength was true (since he was light enough he didn’t need much strength to hold himself upright and toddle), before asking the obvious question. “The PCA has a wrestling club?” To be fair, he & Rose had a fan club (a fact that still baffled him) for their doubles team so a wrestling club didn’t seem too farfetched by comparison… “Had, had a club. Did say it was former.” Taiho corrected, finally rising out of his squat… only to lift one leg and bring it down in a big stomp, repeating it with the other as Petie stared, utterly baffled by this. “Sorry, force of habit. Er… that’s some of the sumo tradition I mentioned that I figured you wouldn’t want to hear about.” The slowbro explained, looking a touch embarrassed.
“Anyway I considered inviting you and Rose… but I was worried I’d be overstepping my bounds since we haven’t known each other for too long.” He continued, helping Petie to his feet by basically hoisting the teddy up easily with one hand. Petie having to just about bite his tongue to keep from asking how inviting them to see a match was overstepping his bounds but offering to train the teddiursa wasn’t. “Rose probably would like being invited to your match, she’s big on that kinda stuff…” Petie opted to say instead… he was still leery about stuff that’d involve Rose spending time with a guy who had a crush on her, but it was the truth. She went to watch matches for fun pretty often and carried him along for the ride whether he wanted to go or not. “Really? We’ll I’ll bring it up to her a little later then… but for now lets move onto the next exercise.” Taiho smiled and patted Petie’s head reassuringly, the teddiursa inwardly groaning and wondering what weird workout was next, before the slowbro suddenly snapped his fingers “Oh! Just remembered… if you happen to need a change let me know. I’ll go trade guard duty with Rose so she can change you. I unfortunately have no experience with… um…” he paused as Petie could SEE the gears in Taiho’s head turning to try and figure out some other word to use before he just gave up and said it “Diapers.”
There was a moment of silence before Petie opened his mouth… only for Taiho cut him off with “No, Mawashi’s don’t count. They’re loincloths.” The slowbro sumo obviously having heard that one before. The teddiursa countered in the most mature manner he could manage… folding his arms and pouting.

PCA – Fat Mon on Campus 3There were many gyms in the Pokemon Combat Academy from large ones designed for the practice of whole teams to one designed to simulate specific type-related climates for training to use of resist that type and most of the gyms had waiting lists a week long to reserve time to train.
