‘Let me know when you land. I miss you.’ 9:45pm
Rhys smiled softly as he turned his phone off of airplane mode and a message from his mate came in. The warm smile on his face startled a few of the people who had sat near to him on the plane from London, where he had seemed quite distant and standoffish towards anyone who talked to him. While normally carefree and quite flirty with strangers, after a long day and an equally long flight, he was less than sociable.
‘Just got off the plane, Mitch. I’ll probably be home in an hour or so. You have work early tomorrow right? Get some sleep. I love you, sweetheart. Sweet dreams <3’ 10:03pm
Rhys sent off, not expecting a reply. He figured the dragon collie would be sleep by now, normally having been in bed by 8pm on a work day. He got his bags from baggage claim and got a cab ride home.
Upon arriving he walked up to the massive house, probably more accurately dubbed a mini-mansion, and unlocked the door. All of the lights were out downstairs, but he saw little reason to turn them on knowing the layout of the place well enough to traverse it in his sleep. He headed up to the bedroom with a yawn, practically dragging his suitcase rather than carrying it up the steps. A soft smile crossed his face as he wondered what position Mitch would be sleeping in without him.
As he opened the bedroom door however, he gasped, involuntarily dropping his bags as his gaze rested on his precious mate’s playful expression. The dog sat in the nude on his knees facing away from him with his ankles resting gently over his tail. Mitch’s head tilted backward to look at the pretty rat that had just walked in, a gentle but unusually confident and playful smile curling his lips as he watched his expression.
Only when Rhys finally tore his eyes away from that smile to let his eyes follow down their back and appreciate the rest of the view, did he notice something shiny being held in those beautiful toes, caressed by soft pink pads. His cheeks instantly felt warm as he recognized the engraved metal ring from his rather large collection of intimate jewelry. It was his favorite. While quite simple in design, it had been a gift from his mate on the night they’d been married. He still clearly remembered the tears in his eyes when he read he inscription ‘1/20/XX Love, Michelle’. While plenty of others had seen the wedding band exchanged at the ceremony, this had been the true gift his mate wished to give to him.
Finally able to move again, the rat quickly closed the distance between him and the lovely dragon dog. He crouched in front of him with a happy smile and kissed his cheek. A slow and very gentle hand moved to stroke the left side of his face, a privilege only he was allowed to take without a nasty bite. His thumb gently brushed underneath the blind eye as the dog leaned into his palm.
“I told you not to wait for me.” Rhys couldn’t help but laugh softly.
“I know… but I wanted to see you before I went to sleep.” He whispered affectionately. “And tease you a little… since you know… you always tease me.”
“You like when I tease you. And you know I think you’re gorgeous and sexy, Michelle.” He smiles and leans in for a gentle kiss. His dragon collie elicits a happy whine and wags his tail as they kiss. “Now… would you be so kind as to put that where it belongs before I show you how greatly I’ve missed you?” the rat smirks.
“O-of course!” Mitch speaks flustered. “A-after you strip of course. Or did you want me to help you with that too?” he barks playfully.
“I want you to help with all of it.”

For those who didn't know. Rhys is married to Mitch. The usually shy dragoncollie decided to surprise pretty rat with a playful confident display. And yes Mitch does allow and take pleasure in being called his real name by his mate.

Okay, you already know how giddy-happy I was when I saw this during the sketch phase, then when Tide posted it, THEN when you wrote this amazing story to go along with it! I love how much meaning that gives to an already soulful, beautiful picture. And Tide did SUCH an amazing job on bringing Mitch to life. :)
