Playful gryphonazism aside, I really like this sketch. It's the look on the gryphon's face, I think- There's an utter sense of despair, a great sadness that seems even more intense than the physical pain. The dragon's expression is harder to read, but perhaps that's because in pieces like this I'm used to seeing very raw emotion- Hatred, anger, vindication- That greater subtleties are lost on me. If I grasp for a definition, I can see in the dragon's expression just a hint of contempt, but primarily a passive sense of just doing- Not thinking, or feeling about the atrocity being committed, but merely guiding the sword-arm to flesh. It's rather indicative of the mental wall that a normal person must likely build up in order to become a soldier.
That said, I don't know the backstory of the characters (if there is one), or even the background of the pic- Even what might be burning is lost on me, aside from a few obvious possibilities. Can't wait to see it finished.

That has got to be probably one of the very few nice comments I've seen around FA
The gryphon character is no one specific, just a gryphon. Dragon however is me, and you got it right. No emotion, just doing, not caring. Not a soldier though :)
The burning part will be shown in the colored version of this ;)
I do appreciate your comment too ^^

A good piece of art, even a simple sketch, writes it's own story. You really need to flesh this out into a full color painting. That aside, I consider myself a diehard dragon lover. Unless this is a mercy killing, it leaves me troubled. Did this come from a dream, by chance? The gryphon appears to have put up no struggle to save his life. The wound is perfectly placed in the center of his chest. Something tells me the dragon and gryphon knew each other very well. When I hear of a killer showing no emotion, it reminds me of the Nazi soldiers in WW2 who were just doing their duties. I guess I'm only trying to say that's how moving this simple sketch is. Very bittersweet. It reminds of the way I felt when Rhaegal took that first terrible bolt in his chest.
