Lizard and Titan stood back to back, determination set in their veins. All around them the zombie horde closed in, an undead shuffling tide that moved relentlessly. Titan readied his shotgun and smiled, singling out a shabby looking corpse.
"Pawn!" he said before firing.
The gun roared and the zombie flew backwards, it's head a pulped mess. Lizard howled, the battle had begun.
Corpses piled up around Lizard and Titan, the pair attacking with fury. One ghoul, dressed in tattered black clothes lunged for Lizard, and the werewolf struck. His claws sunk in deep, tearing at the zombie's temple before ripping off it's head. The body fell, a strip of white shirt, looking like a priest's collar turning red with rancid blood.
"Bishop!" Lizard called out, causing Titan to look.
The warrior nodded.
"I'll give you that one, Lizard."
He pointed to a zombie that was obviously once an elegant woman.
"You're call, Lizard."
The werewolf peered and shrugged.
"Queen?"
Titan smirked.
"Queen it is then."
He fired, dropping the horror.
"Queen!"
"What's the score?" Lizard asked before tearing apart another zombie, frowning as he called it. "Pawn..."
Titan took in a quick count, tallying up the bodies around them.
"I'd say pretty even," he replied.
The pair glanced about, searching for that one zombie which would break the deadlock. Lizard cheered, spotting among the horde a princely looking corpse. He sprang, claws at the ready. Suddenly an explosion rang out and a heavy slug whizzed past Lizard's ear, striking the zombie in the head. It wobbled, skull shattered, and fell. Titan called out in triumph.
"King! That's checkmate, Lizard!"
The werewolf sighed, shoulders slumped in defeat. He decapitated another zombie before slinking back to Titan's side.
"You want another game?" he asked.
Titan looked about at the horde still surrounding them, reloading his gun.
"You're on," he replied. "This time, winner buys the drinks."
The zombies shambled on, ignorant of their fallen in their quest to get to the two friends, but Lizard and Titan weren't worried. Zombie chess was always good fun to play during the apocalypse...
