The van pulled away at speed, leaving nothing but a slowly dissipating cloud of exhaust behind it. The two foxes watched it speed down the street, turn a corner and vanish. Technically it was a baked goods delivery van, but the lurid mural painted across it depicted a rater different meaning of the word 'baked'. Still it had taken many days of negotiation with Finnick to get the vehicle even to that point and nobody wanted to push the issue further. (For his part Finn was just glad to be rid of the elephant costume, among other things.) The taller fox (It wasn't quite accurate to call him 'larger') spoke first.
"Well that was... profitable."
"I told ya, icicles are fine n' all, but ya just can't beat home baked goods."
"Pawpsicles."
"Hustles."
"It's a legitimate business plan."
"That almost got ya arrested for tax evasion."
"That's just the way the city is! They can't stand to see a fox get ahead, you'll figure that out sometime yourself."
The younger fox looked over at the older. In his experience people had been pretty nice, overall. It had always been him that had been objectionable. It was strange to hear a fellow fox talk in such a bitter, jaded tone. He continued staring for a bit, as the silence became awkward, trying to think of a reply.
"Welllllll, maybe. Or maybe not. I dunno much, but I do know ya won't find out less'n you try."
"And if they don't let me try? What? What would I be if I spent my life trying?"
A pause.
"Happy maybe?"
A longer pause, stretching on as the occasional car drove by. Both foxes continued to sit stock still still.
"Alright then, I'll try this scheme of yours. 'Legitimate' baked goods, with the minimum of hustle. But, only 'cause you got something over me. But when I'm right and you have to cart your sorry tail right back to Podunk-"
"Bunnyburrows."
"-whatever. Don't say I didn't warn you."
"And if I'm right?"
The older fox considered this, a slow smile spreading across his face. Carefully he turned towards the younger and leaned forward slightly, so his muzzle was right beside the other's ear. He shut his eyes and said something, almost inaudible. Gideon's eyes opened wide in surprise and he blushed under his fur, fighting the temptation to fidget uncomfortably. He was surprised, shocked and a little uncertain. Plus he wasn't even sure it was physically possible, though he was now very interested in finding out. They held the pose a little while longer.
"That tickles."
"Don't ruin the moment, farm boy."
