And they still came.
When I'm not thinking of cute or sexy bunnys and foxes, this is all too common a theme. A few desperate survivors attempting to hold out against impossible odds. Unsung heroes in unremembered places.

It's hard to tell by the picture, but if this is Albedo, they're at a much higher tech level than WWII. Guns and bullets are just enormously practical no matter what tech level you're at. Aside from a lot of computerized bits and bobs that uplink to command and personal HUDs, the standard infantry weapons of Albedo are fairly mundane. Bullets are cheaper than lasers, after all, and they make you just as dead, just as fast.
Fehnniks, actually. They are particularly fierce fighters and are popular as peacekeepers or paramilitaries, but often get the bad end of the stick. Getting abandoned by their clients or sent into badly over-matched situations are all too common. However, even in victory, opponents quickly learn how expensive such is won and are rarely willing to repeat the experiance.
The Ostfront was far nastier than probably any war in history. Whenever two dictatorships with little regard for human life and a history of racial and political animosity engage in what is essentially total war, shit gets bad, fast. Letting the Russians take Berlin may have been one of the greatest allied mistakes of the entire war, from a humanitarian perspective. I would say the Russians repaid the Germans in kind, but there was nothing kind about it.
The piles of expended brass reminded me if a pic of the inside of a B-17 after returning from a mission over Germany. The waist gunners positions were literally buried under piles of .50 cal. brass. The expended rounds were just dumper inside the fuselage, no ejection ports. A really graphic demonstration of how much ammo could be expended in mission. WCJ
Depending on the load out, you could be looking at about 500 rounds per gun. Checked some sources and there is a debate as to how much was supposed to be carried versus how much could be carried versus how much did some crews carry. The payload margin was not all that great, as well as some CG considerations. A truly massive pile, say some thousands of rounds, might be staged.
Might have been in a B-40, the b-17 gunship. This variant started out with at least 14 .50 MG..2 in the nose, two dorsal turrets, double .50s in the waist , belly ball turret, and two in the tail, along with whatever the field armorers felt like adding. basic count was 14+, with the bomb bay used as a magazine. The 'official' ammo load started at 10,700 rounds, but... see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boein.....lying_Fortress. The biggest problem was the extra weight and aero drag hurt performance. But think what the inside would have looked like after a mission. Piles and piles of brass!!! WCJ
...So seeing this makes me wonder if you happen to have seen the new Battlefield 1 Single player trailer. I know not everyone does teh gaminz thing but wow oh wow did that trailer actually strike a chord with me. Especially a single poignant line near the middle.
"If history only remembers one in a thousand of us then that future will be filled with stories of we were and what we did. But until that day comes, we will stand, we will look death in the eye and we will fight!"
It's a line I've heard repeated in so many ways at so many times yet it always makes me remember all the stories I've heard. All of the research and history I've read over the years. Just hits a bit harder than I ever expected and that trailer kind of shocked me a bit harder than I expected.
