The first event in Jack's childhood.
It was a Friday in the springtime as the six year old Jack began walking to the bus stop. He had his lunch packed in his backpack and all of his homework tidy and neat. He felt especially happy today as he was going to finally give his close friend Sam a gift he had been working on for some time.
“I hope he likes it. He's just so nice” the young grey wolf thought to himself as he starred at it in his hands, his paws holding onto it tightly as he didn't want to drop it. He had been friends with the black wolf for about two years now, and he felt like Sam would always be his best buddy. They did everything together.
He soon could see his friend standing on the edge of the sidewalk as he drew closer. His tail began to wag a bit as he smiled. He had waited for this day for some time and hoped his friend would really like the gift. He put it behind his back as he came up to his friend and gave him wave hello, with Sam returning it.
“Hey, what's up buddy ol' pal?” Jack being friendly as he always was, and that cool spring morning was no different.
“Oh...hey Jack...not much really.” He responded sincerely, but he seemed a bit down compared to his usual upbeat attitude.
“You OK? I know it's school but..” the wolf gave some worry in his voice at his friends off beat response. Sam was never down, no matter what was going on.
“It's nothing really. Don't worry about it. Did you get the homework done?” The black wolf looked over to him but had yet to notice that Jack had his hands behind his back.
“Yeah! I did, but I kinda...wanted to give you something.” He began to fidget a bit as he tried his best not to stutter.
“Hmmm...you don't have to give me anything man.” The black wolf tried to brush it off, but it wasn't going to happen.
“But I do Sam! I worked hard on it and I-” The black wolf turned from his daydreaming and seen Jack with his arms out in front hold a little box with a bow tied around it. Sam looked wide eyed as his friend offered it to him.
“You made me some thing?” as the black wolf interrupted his friend. He took the little box and looked at it for a bit. “Why would you do this anyway, it's not my birthday.”
“Because you're awesome and cool and neat and..” He couldn't stop giving his friend praise. He said his words with love and care as his friend had always been there for him when he needed him. He stopped when he noticed his friend looking at the gift without much of a look on his face with his ears hung back. Jack lowered his own as he took a step forward to try and console his friend. “Is it OK? You're just the best friend I could ever-”
“I can't take this this man.” He held it back out for Jack, but it surprised him some as he held still.
“But you can! I made it-”
“Stop being weird Jack!” The black wolf said as he tossed his gift to the floor, with Jack giving a gasp as he knelt down and took it quickly in his hands, trying to protect it. He tried not to cry as he looked at the box, with some dents in it now.
“The guys at school are making fun of me dude. They say I'm gay with you.” The black wolf looked away as he said it, knowing the words stung from his classmates abuse.
“What's gay?” He gave a confused look at his friend as he had never heard that word before.
“It's like were boyfriend and girlfriend, and I'm the girl.”
“But...I don't care about those people Sam. You're my friend.” He stood back up and tried to hand him back the gift. The black wolf began to get a little mad with Jack, smacking the gift out of his hand.
“Stop being so nice you weirdo! I don't need your gift!” He began to yell at his friend as looked at him with angry eyes. Jack began to get teary eyed as his friend said those mean words to him. He was never this way, where did his friend go?
“Why are you doing this? You're my friend...”
“A friend dude! Not your girlfriend you weirdo!”
Jack began to cry with his hands on his face until he heard a crunch. He pulled his hands away to see Sam had crushed his gift under his foot. He huffed a bit as he finished and turned away from Jack, looking out at the bus stop. “It was probably stupid anyways.”
A sense of anger began to come over Jack as he rose to his feet, holding what he had made for Sam in his grasp. He was completely devastated as he began to shake. He felt angry, very angry as all the hard work he had put into the gift was gone. His friend didn't even care about it or him.
A fist flew from Jacks' right arm as the broken gift fell to the ground. It landed squarely into Sam's' face as the black wolf staggered back and held his check. He began to scream but stopped at the sight of Jack. He was breathing heavier and his fangs were showing through. He looked pretty scary to the black wolf as Jack began to yell at him.
“Your stupid....you such a jerk! I worked hard on that for you! I don't care about what other people think you idiot! You dumb stupid idiot!” His rage began to grow as Sam had begun to realize just how much he'd hurt his friend.
“I hate you...I HATE YOU! I F-F-FUCKING HATE YOU!!!” Those words hit Sam with alot of weight behind them, moreso than the punch he had just taken. He began to cry as he felt so terrible for hurting his friend. He turned and began to run towards the street as Jack tried to grab his backpack.
He stood frozen then as he watched as a truck came past. His world slowed down to a glaciers pace as the sound of tires screeching filled the morning air. His hand stretched out and frozen stiff as he could only watch.
In those minutes beforehand, they were two very close friends. Sam had hidden away from Jack that the kids at school had made fun of him fairly badly for always being so close. They had a loving friendship that they thought would always be there. Feeling like nothing could change it.
But now Jack couldn't stop screaming as a woman held him in her arms. She was a stranger who tried to calm the child as the police and EMTs arrived on the scene. A crowd of people had gathered as they watched as the coroner pronounced the wolf dead at the scene, 8:27am, three minutes before their bus was to arrive.
