I'll never outlive you, you'll never outlive me
The last time I drew my Andean condor shaman and his daughter was about 4 years ago.
It's a little story which I'll probably keep for myself, not make a complete graphic novel about it. There's already another graphic novel planned after my first, but still in progress. Can't reveal much of it yet.
Shaman got his title for being born with the ability to listen to the spirits of nature, using their instructions to do the right thing instead of constantly listening to one's own emotions, like most people would be tempted to. Shaman would always do things for the greater good, never for selfish reasons. Logically, Shaman was never in danger of making a choice which caused terrible consequences for both himself and many others.
Until the day he didn't want to sacrifice his wife to poachers in order to save the rest of the small family. The day he wanted to sacrifice himself instead. His wife, who had found out in time, went willingly, understanding that the poachers would leave after one kill of this already highly endangered species. And because she was the older and weaker one of the couple- for that had always been part of nature's selection. The logical way.
After her death, the spirits of nature felt betrayed that Shaman hadn't obeyed them and they decided to never communicate with him again, making his special abilities completely useless for him and everyone else.
Their daughter hatched, and Shaman became over-protective over his only child. Loving and kind, but barely leaving her out of sight. His obsession to never let another family member die again became so strong, it turned him into something unnatural. Something that existed against the laws of nature, and powerful enough to survive it. The spirits broke the communication bond with him, and Shaman somehow managed to break his hierarchical rank in the universe itself as an act of pure revenge.
So now he's some sort of raging fatherly-love zombie that can't be killed. Sometimes he's out to slaughter and devour both poachers and innocent humans and children. Hatred, the result caused by his one choice based on selfish emotion, blinded him too much to see a difference between those that deserved death and those that didn't. He wouldn't even hesitate to kill those that tried to cure him from his eternal darkness.
Needless to say, new titles for him appeared from all directions, slowly burrying Shaman's original title in forgetfulness. The Great Black One, the Hollow Shriek, Skullbird, Mauler, Soul Reaper, Dark Wanderer of the Mountains… the list went on and on.
Shaman became a thing that people down in the valley would most frequently make ghost stories about. Stories about an angry spirit that never slept, a spirit that was always on watch. Seeing his daughter was considered a bad omen, as this meant that he was near as well.
Daughter still loves daddy no matter what. She just never gets the chance to warn any humans to leave the mountains and their creatures alone. Daddy always follows, daddy is always faster to do his thing. At least she regularly gets fed that way.
Haha, look at 4 years of absence turned me into.
